Hindsight is always 20/20 and things that didn't seem worthy of concern when they happened take on a new significance.
"I could kill that guy!!" is a rather routine phrase, meaning you're upset with someone, not that you're literally going to kill him. Nobody would think twice about it. But if that person then actually went and killed "that guy", then everyone would say, "Well, he said he was going to kill someone! Why didn't anyone do something??"
