Outrageous!

Pingsteal

That Gin & Juicers hunk.
So my wife takes our cat, Apollo, to the vet today. He has been bleeding from the left front paw. I thought maybe he stuck his foot on something but he has a 'mass' on one of his little paw pads. Well, the vet doesn't know what it is but he does know that it is going to cost 1200 dollars to have it removed.

Let me say this again....1200 dollars.

Really? To tak a little chunk out of his paw pad? I went into the hospital a couple of years ago because of heat exhaustion and that came to about 1200 too. Course I had insurance to knock some of that down, but even so. Jesus...I don't get why it's so expensive to take a little bitty thing off his foot.

So now I guess I am weighing my options. I don't have 1200 to get this done. Should I take him somewhere else and find a cheaper alternative? It doesn't appear to be causing him any pain so do I just let it go for now and hope it heals up? I just know I am vehemently upset right now because something is wrong with my cat and I can't get it taken care of because these people want to charge so damned much.

People know we love our pets very much and use that to make a profit for themselves. I'm glad my wife went, I'd have probably punched the vet in the face if he told me it was going to cost 1200 bucks for this. I'll just make the cat drink some Jack Daniels and do it myself if I have to.

That is ridiculous, I had a small skin tag/tumor taken off my dog for $200.00, and it was a good vet too, not a hack. SHOP AROUND !!

Sorry your kitty is ailing! :huggy: But... Several questions come to mind right away:

  • If vet does not know what it is, how can they know how much it will cost?
  • How old is kitty? Quality and duration of life?
  • If removed, will/might it come back?
  • Which vet? So that someone may be able to steer you to a different one.

Two words for you: Second Opinion!!

Pingsteal's wife chiming in, I took Apollo to the vet so I can answer those questions:

1) Estimate list included stuff like anesthesia, x-rays, post-op pain meds.
(Vet did circle a few things on the list that were optional like the use of laser for the surgery, x-rays, and dentistry. Why that was on there for a mass on his foot I have NO idea. His teeth are just fine)

2) He's 3 yrs old and weighs 12lbs. Fat and sassy. Right now he's sitting on top of the La-Z-Boy recliner like he owns the place (so in other words, business as usual)

3) Vet didn't know what the mass was so couldn't say if/might it come back.
Seeing as how I lost a Doberman to cancer as a kid, you can imagine I'm a little freaked right now.

4) VCA St. Mary's Animal Hospital on Three Notch Rd, St. Mary's County.

My Sweetest Boy
Severa...I would recommend Dogs & Cats in Bowie. They did surgery on my Boxer, Biscuit who had mast cell cancer. His cardiologist is also there. They were wonderful and are very experienced in cancer treatments and surgery (even if not cancer). I think a consult with Dr. Snakard (the surgeon) is about $150. I've been going there for 5 years. I recommend them over Annapolis. They are very compassionate and explain everything. Their surgery prices are not the cheapest but I would at least let them diagnose your kitty.

Best of luck to you and your baby.

p.s. Bowie isn't too far from Southern Maryland.

:yay: He is definitely worth "saving". However, "We're not sure what it is" would not be good enough for me. A second opinion is in order! I can also understand where you are a bit "gun shy" after having a similar experience before. We have a kitty who had a problem with one of her claws bleeding and it looked like there was some kind of growth there. We took her to our regular vet --Tidewater in Mechanicsville/Charlotte Hall.

They gave us all the best and worst case scenarios. Even with the possibility of surgery to remove the toe, it was nowhere near what you were quoted. And it was "all inclusive" too. The vet recommended we try an antibiotic regimine first, and that worked! She has been fine since, and it has been almost two years.

Whatever your decison, I hope your kitty gets better!! :huggy:

Does the estimate include the optional stuff listed? If so, I would ask for the estimate without all that.

I have been going to Three Notch since 1991 and have always loved them.. Dr. O'Connor and Dr. Feldhaus being my favorites. Dr. Feldhaus takes care of all my sister's cats and she (my sister) is a crazy cat lady.

Oh!! Just had another thought! Pingsteal/Severa, you might want to check with Dr. Darnell -- 443-975-2495. She has a mobile vet service and is really, really good!!!

Had to share this pic of Apollo today at the vet.

(I have him wrapped in a towel. I worked in a pet store years ago and found that doing this helps in many cases to keep them calm)

Apollo is a very handsome guy though he looks like he's had enough of that towel!

Breton??

Just a shot in the dark, since your not saying, that sounds like a Breton Vet in Leonardtown charge. After some outrageous bills there we now go elsewhere.
