Mental health issues, not books, led to teacher's suspension

"It didn't start with the books and it didn't end with the books," State's Attorney for Wicomico County Matt Maciarello told The Times. "It's not even a factor in what law enforcement is doing now."

[clip]

In fact, McLaw has not been arrested. No warrant for his arrest has been issued.

Concerns about McLaw were raised after he sent a four-page letter to officials in Dorchester County. Those concerns brought together authorities from multiple jurisdictions, including health authorities.

McLaw's attorney, David Moore, tells The Times that his client was taken in for a mental health evaluation. "He is receiving treatment," Moore said.

Because of HIPPA regulations mandating privacy around healthcare issues, he was unable to say whether McLaw has been released.

McLaw's letter was of primary concern to healthcare officials, Maciarello says. It, combined with complaints of alleged harassment and an alleged possible crime from various jurisdictions led to his suspension. Maciarello cautions that these allegations are still being investigated; authorities, he says, "proceeded with great restraint."

What I Didn't See At First About The MD School Teacher/Sci-Fi Writer

It's a bizarre case. A middle school teacher writes a couple not so great novels and self publishes them under a pen name, K. Voltaer. This teacher was arrested and sent for a mental health exam and still hasn't been heard from. Scary stuff. Something to stoke the fears of the community. Something to scare the crap out of anyone who writes and publishes anything for the world to see. Something about the lack of detail in this story got me to go on a hunt for more information and it doesn't add up.

[clip]

Patrick McLaw is 23 years old. He's a middle school teacher. He wrote these books in college and published them in his sophomore year in college. The local sheriff may be thinking is that 3 years lend credence to the "planned" part of the school shooter profile. If that was the case, then a simple sit down with Mr. McLaw should have cleared this up. Except, Mr. McLaw may have asked a couple logical, but challenging questions of the officers and he got tossed into a lock down, mental health ward for his troubles.

The concern is that Patrick McLaw "uses an alias" justified this investigation is more than frightening. It doesn't fit what we know about school shooter/bombers. 24% of school shooters want attention not anonymity. I can't find McLaw's pen name on Instagram, twitter or Facebook. I can find McLaw under his own name on Linked In. The newsers on this case seem to be a bit lazy. They're relieved that there is no threat to their local schools, but blithely disregard the violation of Patrick McLaw's civil rights and they don't seem to give a hoot about his whereabouts or well being. No one in McLaw's hometown is concerned that the local sheriff's department may be overreaching and demanding accountability. No one's tracked down Mr. McLaw's friends or family (and I admit, they aren't jumping out of the internet to defend him) but, surely someone knows Patrick McLaw and can add some perspective to what's happening to him.

The story, as told by the Cambridge, Maryland PD has holes in it. Big holes. We have no acknowledgement of McLaw's First, Second, Fourth and Eighth Amendment rights (free speech, gun rights, reasonable search, cruel punishment). No acknowledgment that the sheriff is running amok. We have a vague (bogus) "threat" from a guy, who, by the looks of his resume, McLaw was well liked enough to get a promotion in the Delmar School System and passed screening to become a teacher in the Dorchester School System. We don't have any guns or bombs. No one coming forward saying "yeah, this guy needs to be investigated", - nothing. We don't know if the sheriff got the idea that Patrick McLaw had the "intent, means and motivation" to carry out a fictional "threat" he wrote about over 3 years ago about a school 888 years into the future from a nosy Parker, jealous co-worker, jilted lover or a legitimate witness. We have no reason to doubt Patrick McLaw's sanity or need for Patrick McLaw to prove he's of sound mind. Adding to this is that no one is reporting where Mr. McLaw can be found. Talk about a 1984esque scenario of the government "disappearing" some one. I bet Mr. McLaw will have a great outline for his next novel, should he find the courage to write it.

haha...Yes, we should not commit those who are a danger to themselves or others. Those who are delusional or schizophrenic. The manics, who are unable to function. We should allow them to wander aimlessly through our society. Well, in your case that seems to be happening.

So like I said in the beginning. It's the people who thought there was a story here who are over reacting! Nothing to see here. Just being lemmings led by the media!

In reading the WHOLE article, especially the updated sections, it appears that it was the content of his letter, and not the books, that caused the most concern. Depending on the content of the letter, the books may have become a concern, where they may not have been otherwise. So I think it is wrong to conclude that they were overreacting when we don't know what was in the content of the letter.

LMAO!!! Who is saying anyone is holding him? LOL....I think you are watching too many Bourne movies.

From the article: "He is currently at a location known to law enforcement and does not currently have the ability to travel anywhere.”

If that isn't holding him WTF is? Giggle boy.

Then you still have a violation of the 4th amendment. The ORIGINAL story did state that it was the books that originally alarmed the BoE and DCSO. Now the DA is saying, nope, wasn't the books at all.

The original story did say that, but as we know, the media is not always accurate. I would guess that the letter and not the books is what instigated the search. And again, since we don't know the content of the letter, how can we say his rights were violated?

Steven King better leave the country before they get him.

What about the people who read this stuff? An author is no more than a dealer. Isn't the real problem, the users???

This stuff is endlessly fascinating. The impulse here, is, clearly, "Oh my god! I buy into fiction and act on it all the time! This is a danger and someone needs to do something!!!'

We are no longer about sticks and stones. We are all about words being able to hurt us. We have gone from punishing behavior to punishing what might happen.

Get the books! Get the records and tapes and CD's! Start the fire and start punishing the heretics and witches!!! :jameo:

That's like saying 2+2=whatever we decide.

2+2=4, regardless of people's opinions

But, that is the reality in the United States of America, land of the free, home of the brave.

The reason this happens is because people on the left see and want certain things they see as being about freedom and liberty yet turn a blind eye when their team violates freedom and liberty and then, in turn, people on the right see certain things a being about freedom and liberty and we, too, turn a blind eye when our team violates freedom and liberty.

And so it, we, goes.

Unto dust we shall return

Very well. So given that the authorities have been involved in this case since very early on, do you really think that the cops would show up at his house hoping he'd give consent to a search? Or is a more reasonable assumption that since his mental health status was already in question, they got the warrant they needed?

Larry, where is someone's freedom being violated here?

I'm in a sour mood this AM so, let's make sure we're on the same page first;

The comment was that the constitution is what we say it is and I was agree with that.
If what you meant is that the SCOTUS is made up of people, and people are fallible,we agree. If you mean Japanese detainment camps were constitutionally protected because people during WWII said it was ok, we disagree.

People are fail-able which is why we have the Constitution. When we ignore the safeties...we ignore the safeties.

Just like that. "We" do not want to abide by the Constitution because it's inconvenient, for whatever reason. "We" do not want our elected representatives to abide by the Constitution. If we did, we'd elect ones who were more faithful to it. And since this is supposedly a government "of the people, by the people, for the people" guess what? "We" make the rules.

What is amusing to me are the folks who yell and bawl about Constitutional fidelity, then in the same breath will say same-sex marriage should remain against the law. WOOT!
