Oyster season

Just wondering... when do watermen start harvesting oysters? The last two mornings there has been a boat off Hollywood Shores and I'm pretty sure that's what he was doing. For some reason I thought they did it in the cooler weather.

Oyster Season for oysters harvested off public bars does not begin until October 1. I'm guessing what you're seeing is a clamming boat, and not someone that is oystering. A clam boat has a conveyor that goes down to the bottom with water jets that blast the clams out of the mud. They conveyor caries them up to the clammer who sorts them as they go by.

Here's a picture. http://easternbay.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/img_5707.jpg

If you really think this boat is oystering and not clamming, it is worth a call to the Natural Resources Police. You can make an anonymous tip on the "Catch a Poacher" Hotline: 1-800-635-6124

Here's the summary of commercial regulations: http://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/regulations/commregs.html

Thank you

That's what he's doing, his boat looks like that.
next question.... where do jelly fish go in the winter? Do they migrate or go dormant?

Months with R's in it, September, October, etc.. is when they harvest oysters.

I have a picture but for some reason it won't upload

Probably to large a file..

Traditionally oyster harvesting was restricted to cooler months (months with an "R") but that was due to a lack of refrigeration and to allow warm water parasites to leave the oysters.
