Painting the porch

So, I learned something about myself today: I actually enjoy painting. When we bought our new house, I painted the entire house (except the basement) and it was more about the need to do it as opposed to paying someone.

Sunday we pressure washed and scraped the large front porch, cleaned up between the cracks and prepped. Yesterday, I painted and realized I enjoyed doing it. Listening to the birds chirping, a bee working on a newly flowering bush, the quiet of my own thoughts, and then seeing the results was great. I will continue today and hope it is a tad warmer. I am looking forward to placing all my contained flowers, plant stands and glider back on the porch and make it a welcoming entry into our comfortable home.

Sometimes it is the small things that make me happy; like seeing my recently planted flowers attracting a hummingbird. With all the negative crap going on, it is important to stop and appreciate what we have and realize there is a lot of goodness if you stop and take the time to appreciate it. :flowers:

I like to paint too. Sometimes the prep work (at least painting inside) can be a pain but love the instant gratification. So did you actually paint your porch or stain? I'd love to be able to spruce up the outside but I don't think it's in our budget right now. The pressure pump went and we had to get another one. Oh the joys of home ownership!

This blonde looking for work sees a sign on a house: “PAINTER WANTED.” So she goes to the house and knocks on the door, telling the owner, “I’m here for the paint job.”
“OK.” The guys hands her a couple cans of latex. “Here’s the paint. I want you to paint the porch.”
She says, “No problem,” gets the paint and sets off to work. It’s not very long until she knocks on the door again. “All finished.”
Handing over the money, the owner exclaims, “That didn’t take very long!”
“I even gave it two coats,” she says, pocketing the money. “And oh, by the way, it’s not a Porch, it’s a Ferrari.”

It had already been painted maroon so we went with that. My husband also rebuilt some flower beds with landscape ties and we painted them to match. New lattice and some flowers and it will look great when it is done.

Painting satisfies my need for instant gratification. You see it as you go, and in one afternoon you can completely transform a room.

That said, I do not miss home maintenance and repair one little bit.

FF same here, sometims i look at it as zen painting. Tuning the everyday life crap out and just zoning in. Like you said " Listening to the birds chirping, a bee working on a newly flowering bush, the quiet of my own thoughts, and then seeing the results was great. " That is being in your zone.

My dad always had a can of paint ready to go. He would come home from work, and paint a little of the interior walls of the house. He said it was relaxing. My mom loved it because she never had to scrub the grubby marks off the wall put there by 6 children!

I wouldn't go quite that far but it sounds like your Dad found a way to be productive, enjoy the task and make your Mom happy!

The porch is done; three coats on some of the floor area. The new lattice and landscape ties project just about completed. Yesterday I started on the split rail fence and enjoyed waving to people passing by.
Next, we have to dig up the plastic pond in the front that is nothing but a mosquito breeding site. Not interested in cleaning it and making it work.
No rest for the weary, as they say!

Sounds very productive! Saturday I cleaned out the larger flower bed. So now it's looks pretty. Well, as pretty as dirt can look, lol. I redid the brick edging along the front as well. Now I just need some flowers!!
