My wife and her sister did the same thing when they took their yearly vacation to Boothbay. Worcester was a nice 1/2 way spot from Western MD. They'd stay in a motel and continue on the next day.

I'd take a second look at Sturbridge...maybe Leominster. (Airbnb's still run $100+ though)
I know from there its about another 3 hrs+ up towards Lewiston/Auburn.

No cheap lodging up there. Wife and I have found nothing acceptable less than I think about 140 a night.

They stopped going about 10 years ago. My wife has been trying to get her sister to start going again, but her sister has no desire to leave WV.
