Parents Ask Doctors to Keep Daughter Small

My sick side wants to say... Why waste the money. Chop off her legs since she cant walk. She will be short and lite.

I am so very blessed
That is a really "iffy" situation and I relaly can't speculate if keeping Ashley small is/was the right thing to do. Clearly her parents believe that her medical treatments are reasonable, and as her caregivers, their opinion overrides anything that I may think.

I do have to interject though, that in my experience with my mother (severe stroke victim/paralyzed/non-vocal, etc.) her being 110 lbs is a huge advantage. Moving mom from her wheelchair to her bed, into the shower, into a vehicle, for instance, is much easier to do at 110 pounds vice 175 pounds. I don't think that I'd be able to lift her if she were much heavier. I'm grateful for her small stature.

I saw a story on Discovery Health Channel about the same kind of thing. Except the parents wanted their daughters growth stunted because they are "little people" (or midgits, or whatever the heck the politically correct term is) and their daughter is not. They said that in thier life, being a little person is normal and they want to all be the same. They had actually brain washed the kid into wanting it too (I think she was around 12 at the time). They were messing with her hormones, etc. I don't think that is right.

I'm not sure what to make of this story.

This girl is exactly the same size that T is right now. I can't imagine the psychical demands having to carry him around and care for him day after day.

I think as long as abortion is legal, no one should have a word to say about how parents treat or care for their child.

In this particular case, I think the parents did what was right for their family and everyone else should butt out, unless they want to care for the child.

Yeah, I know House had an episode about it as well, but I saw another story on discovery health about it. It was a show that went into whether or not people should be allowed to change a baby's gene in utero to ensure they are a certain way (height, hair color, etc). They said they are trying to narrow down the gene for midgits because many midgit parents don't want normal size children. They want children like them. That's when they brought up this couple that was affecting their daughters growth. She was still WAY taller than them.

Wasn't there a story awhile back about a deaf couple who did something to ensure their child would be deaf as well? They didn't maim the child (I don't think) but it was something that caused a huge outcry.

My kids were deaf until very recently.

Morally you would think that altering a child that is already handicap to better the care givers, is better than taking a healthy child and turning him into one.

for my Bio degree, I had to take a Medical Ethics course and we'd argue our stand on sh!t like this - taking into consideration all angles that we could foresee. :dead: Legalities v. Mentalities v. Medicine v. Emotions v. Quality of Life

I seem to avoid most of these media magnets now and feel like, "Sh!t, I don't know what I would do, unless I had to".......

How does she type

who knows...but NOFX has a funny song about her...

It's kinda hard to wear high heels, or slip on banana peels
How does she get in and out of tubs
I hope she dont get mad, I hope she thinks this song is good not bad
Cause we think that she's totally rad, she's nubs.

No fingers, no toes, she doesn't own elbows,
No phalanges no knobby knees to knock
She don't need knuckles or hands to go see punk rock bands
She's always in the stands, she's nubs
She can't pick up a phone, she can't get dressed alone
She's got no funny bone, she's nubs
No shoes for feet but we sure do think she's neat, she's nubs, she's nubs, she's nubs.

I asked her if she want a drink, I asked her if she liked Toronto,
I asked her to go out to the bar, but all she said was no thanks, no and no

It was time for us to leave, so I grabbed and shook her sleeve
and told her I'd see her at the next club she got into a pack
and some guy put her on his back, she said goodbye and kinda waved her stub

She's got beautiful eyes, and breasts regular size,
but without calves and thighs, she's nubs
It's hard to give good head or get tied to a bed,
when all you've got is a body and head, she's nubs

She's nubs, She's nubs, She's nubs...
Oh she may not walk the walk, and she may not like to talk
But boy she sure knows how to rock, she's nubs.

It is an interesting moral and ethical dilemna. I have to admire the courage and strength of Ashley's parents for making the commitment to care for her for the rest of her life. It cannot be easy caring for an adult with the mind of a 3-month old and they took the steps they felt were necessary to provide the best care for her. I can only imagine what a tough decision that was.

One thing I found very interesting and not mentioned in the article is that her condition (static encephalopathy) is in the vast majority of cases caused by excessive drinking by the mother during pregnancy. I don't know if that's the case here but it's food for thought.

Absolutely postively disgusting!! i can't believe that keeping a child small is for the benefit of the child...it benefits the parents.... the mother probably did something during the pregnancy to make the child turn out the way she did. Shame on the mother..shame on the parents period. It makes me sad to see that poor young girl..not able to function properly..not able to grow properly..all because of the parents. And they say to others it is just speculation because others don't know what is really going on..yeah because I bet they have people chomping at the bit to tell these supposed caregivers off. How unethical to keep the child small for their benefit!!! Makes me angry. Makes me completely sick to my stomach..that a child has suffered tremendously for the past nine years..and something that will torment her for the rest of her life.
