How young is too young for kids to own a cellphone? At what age did you give your kids' phones and what did you consider before doing so? Post a comment in this story, comment on WTOP's Facebook Page or use #WTOP on Twitter.

WASHINGTON -- Children are getting phones at a younger age every year, but it can be hard for parents to know when their youngsters are ready for the responsibility.

A decade ago, 16 was the age when most children got their first phone. In 2009, it was 12. "

Ha! I didn't get my own phone until I moved into my first house when I was 30. And then it was a land line!

When my kids were growing up, cell phones were rare. Only people that had them were Lawyers, and the well-to-do. I gave each of my kids a pager, just so I could keep tabs on them. They were around 12 years old. They had better drop what they were doing, and either come home, or call me when I paged them. My Grandson got his first cell phone at the age of 13. He's very mature for his age.

I got my first one after I moved out of my parents home back in 2000. I think my parents paid for it until I turned 18, then I switched it over to my name.

when they started participating in after school programs that would require them to be picked up, since the busses don't run then.

My son will be 14 in July and keeps asking for a cell phone. However I don't think he needs one yet. Maybe next school year for when Basket ball season starts. If he needs to use the phone he can use mine. I think a cell phone for a teen should be just that no internet or any extras. I know someone who gave her kids i phones and they are 8 and 10. I don't even have an i phone lol no way I am buying my 13 year old one. When he does get one it will be a basic prepaid phone. When he gets old enough for a job he can save up and buy himself a fancy phone if he wants and pay the bill.
