Parties in general

Our new home is great for having parties. Whether it just be snackie finger foods or a sit down dinner, I do believe my husband and I will be entertaining a lot. We both love to cook and could easily handle a party with 5 or 25 people.

We have two big bashes a year in the summer. We do crab feasts. One is for my daughter/husband and their friends and one is for me/my husband and our friends. The turn out is approx. 60-75 per party. We have crab feasts down to a science. I so look forward to them.

I love the planning and orchestrating. My first Thanksgiving dinner was in a tiny highrise apartment in Hawaii - we invited everyone we knew who lived in the barracks or was single. Fed people in shifts. Had to call home to find out how to make gravy (no internet then). One turkey came out of the oven, another and a ham went in. People passed out from too much food all over the apartment and lanai. I think we fed close to 50 people over the course of the day - and I had a table that seated 2. I made 6 dozen homemade rolls (i've never in my life served cheater rolls.)

Two years ago, my husband called me Christmas eve when I was on my way to work and told me 5 extra people were coming for dinner - I swerved my car over to Safeway and picked up a second prime rib and some extra side fixings and it was like it had been planned all along. I've got enough nice dishes that no one eats with paper or plastic and no food containers go on the table (except that one year, my husband brought out the horseradish bottle and I gave him The Look) I'm actually energized when there's a wrench thrown into the works.

What I am NOT is a hostess. I prefer to watch what is going on and see everyone enjoying.

My great grandmother was the one who could throw a dinner together for 50 people in no time at all. She made so much food it was unreal.

I am not the best cook but I do try hard.

I've yet to throw a shin-dig where there wasn't always a handful that pitched in with a fury at the end and there was hardly any clue such a party ever happened when they were done.

There is one party that comes to mind though where the clean up didn't all happen same night... it wasn't until the next day that we emptied the buckets, reset the landscaping and called the tow truck.

The last soiree we had we entertained around 50-60 people all inside and fully decorated for Christmas. We definitely enjoy opening our home at the holidays. Luckily, I have a bar in the basement and had set up a separate bar in the butler's pantry and we had food everywhere. This year we get to host a graduation party, boy says he'd like a roast pig and will probably do another Christmas party.

Pffftttt...I'm over feeding anyone that doesn't live under my roof. There was a time that I enjoyed it, but I got tired of all the responsibility falling on my shoulders. Prepare everything for the party, including cleaning the house and putting crap away. Go buy all the crap. Haul it into the house and put it away. Take it all back out and stage it. Cook, clean as you go. Exhausted by the time guests arrive, but make sure everyone has everything they need. Clean up after.

The only thing I get all worked up over anymore is Sunday night dinner, and I lay it out.

I think that dinner parties or big gatherings get off track because there is always going to be someone complaining about things. So what if three people chose to bring deviled eggs. I'll bet you they each used a different recipe. So what if there was too much unsweet tea and not enough sweet tea. And then theirs always someone that's gonna get bent over the placement of Jello Shooters.

Its the petty complainers that end up ruining it for everyone in the long run.

Who had the Jello shooter party? I wasn't there, I was at John & Sharon's and everyone came over after the JS party to tell us what happened.
