Passing Cops...

What's the rule (or law) about passing cops on the road? As in, if you are a respectful driver and find yourself in the unfortunate spot behind a cop, and other people pass both of you, but the cop doesn't pull over the guy that passed you both, why?

Momma always told me, don't pass police no matter what. Any why? Respect for the law - not because he'll pull you over for speeding (well, he might). But I don't get it when I'm behind a cop, people will attempt to, and successfully pass a cop and not get pulled over. No fair!:tap:

I've actually asked a cop friend if people get on his nerves when he is driving. You know, go sooooo slow you want to scream. He said yes. :lol:

Okay then - question 2:

What if the cop is out of county (i.e. PG cop in Calvert, or a St. Mary's cop in Calvert)

Two days, two cops, two hour drive home lengthened by being stuck behind a cop and slower drivers.

That, you would think would be a correct assumption. However a non-speeding cop is something I haven't seen in a while.

:killingme:lmao: Now that is the truth!!! I often hang behind them because people get out of their way and you can ride on their coat tails. I'm always afraid they are pacing me from in front though. Is that possible?

If you're not doing anything illegal I don't see the purpose of being intimidated by a cop's presence. As far as respect goes, I don't see how passing a cop is disrespectful unless you're going above the posted speed limit. I (along with the rest of traffic) passed a cop who was doing 40 on I95 as he appeared to be pacing a slow driver.

I had a cop pull out in front of me coming out of the Sheriff's office today around 3:30 at the intersection with the State Police Barracks. Blue Crown Victoria. He knew he didn't have time. Had to hit my brakes and then I laid on the horn. I couldn't believe he did it! He started to pull out, then stopped, then pulled out right in front of me anyway. I would have been ticketed for that. Totally unsafe driving.

I had an out-of-county cop pass me doing 75 in a 55. I followed her and wrote down her information. What happens at the next red light? She flips on her wig-wags and pulls me over....a cop from the home county comes over and tells me to continue driving...

Anyone else have a Calvert warning in St Marys County? :killingme

I have no problem either calling the duty officer of the state police barracks or the sheriff's office if I observe reckless driving from an officer. Just make sure to not the time (preferably on a 24 hour clock) and the place. Even better if you can identify the unit. Got the Calvert deputy driving the white suv without a light bar, the office immediately knew who had ran the red light in front of me.

I would not pass a cop going the speed limit out of respect for the laws of my country or state, not out of respect for the particular officer in front of me. On the flip side, I can't understand people who slam on their brakes and refuse to do anywhere near the speed limit just because there is a cop in their vicinity. DORKS, HE WON'T PULL YOU OVER FOR DOING THE SPEED LIMIT, OKAY?!?! That said, most of the cops I've seen fly down the road 20-30mph over the limit so there's not much opportunity to pass them anyway.

While the majority of police officers I know do in fact speed, if they are doing 55, you can USUALLY pass them (very slowly) with no consequences. If you blast past them at 70, well, expect to get stopped. If you go by at 60, you SHOULD be safe. However, each police officer is different, and some believe since they are "the man" you can't pass them AT ALL. Use caution.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it.
