staring into the abyss

Although your sarcastic barb was remarkably dull, I have managed to pick up on your attempt to confuse the issue by labeling me some liberal crank and questioning my ability to understand that all republicans are not related to each other, nor do they all share the same positions or policy.
Pat Robertson was the president of one of the largest Political Groups in the country, the Christian Coalition. He currently sits on the Council for National Policy which is a major political organization. He and others of that organization have held regular meetings with senior members of the Republican party and are one of the most powerful campaign contributors for the RNC. He has met personally with the President a number of times, including one case where he apparently misquoted the president on a personal conversation concerning the invasion of Iraq (which became another CNN moment).
However, the two men are already linked in the minds of many Americans. The connection is largely one way, Robertson is likely not a personal friend of Bush, but the President has recognized Robertson's sway with a large voting block that he can identify with (conservative Christians). Robertson sees the president as sharing some moral positions and has leveraged this into political activities. This has been rewarded with faith-based initiative money and, at the very least, lip service from the RNC. However, given Robertson's large media presense and the assumption that he holds the ear of senior members of the Repbulican party, the President is taking collateral damage from Robertson's most recent idiocy.
My argument was that the President would be better served by openly cutting any percieved ties to Robertson. Whatever audience he loses in this will pale in the votes he may lose by maintaining any semblance of a connection to Robertson.
