We are going to be relocating to the area, and after realizing how much housing is going for up there, we are turning to base housing. can anyone give me any info on the ppv of base housing. is base housing nice, big, small, does it have garages. the only picture i have been able to find doesn't really show if its joined together or a stand alone. anyways any information would be greatly appreciated. its always stressful relocating.

thanks again. good day!

Hi Nikki. I'm retired military and live somewhat close to the base housing on Willows Road. That is the one you want -- the housing on base (unless your the Admiral, married to an Admiral or part of the Admirals staff) sux.

Welcome to Southern MD. Most people love it or hate it. Feel free to PM if you desire.

Most of the housing on base are townhouses and apartments. It all depends on rank too. The housing on Willow's Road as the other poster stated is alot better if you can get it. My dad is retirned Navy, I was in the military and so was my husband. I've lived in some crappy base housing...but Pax River isn't nearly as bad as a few I've had to live in. Though I can't really complain...it was free.

WELCOME!

Not really free when you give up your BAQ and VHA, though you don't have to worry about electric and heating.

nikkidavis,

Do you have a sponsor at Pax for your change of station? They should be able to get you information and "waiting list" status for the base housing.

I heard through a reliable source that the upkeep/maintenance side of housing was being privatized. I believe there was also a article about it in the tester. I also heard but can not confirm that they were going to implement billing of electricity to the occupants.

That would suck, about the billing for electricity, if true (not saying it isn't). Hasn't most of public works on base been contracted out already?

Yes, residents are going to 'pay' for all utilities starting at a date I can't recall.

You can find more information here.

OUCH...I didn't realize that they would have to start paying utilities soon. It was nice not having to worry about electric, water, or worry about paying for trash pickup.

Nothing is free. BAQ and VHA, as you probably know, is an allowance. This allowance is given up in exchange for the use of government quarters. If military families are to start being charged for utilities, then some portion of the BAQ/VHA will be provided.

Glenn Forest was by far the nicest. I lived there in 91 thru 93 when they were fairly new. You have to provide carpet downstairs though as it linoleum. Carpenter Park units were huge when redone. The others I have not seen in years. I used to live in Shirra Circle and because it was classified substandard we got to keep 25% of baq allowance. They were torn down years ago to make room for the new exchange.

I was discussing with one of my co-workers how he likes Glenn Forest. He tells me he loves the place. BTW He is a E-5. Glenn Forest is the off base military housing.

base housing

Hi Nikki, don't know if you've gotten here yet, or found another answer. Let me share my opinion with you. We live in Conrad Heights, my husband is E6, don't know what rank housing you may be looking for. If you are looking at enlisted housing, I can tell you this, it is very small here. We just came from Lemoore, CA with our own garage, and a huge house (base housing at that), I want to go back! There are no garages, not even carports in any of the parks on base (Carpenter Park, Lovell Ct, Conrad Hgts, Chaffee Ct). Only in Glenn Forest off base is there garages. But there is a waiting list for those units. The ppv started Aug. 1, and the rent is taken out through allotment, so it really doesn't seem any different. As of now, we don't pay anything for utilities, in the future we will, when meters are put in, maybe when new stuff is built, '07 I believe is when they are expecting it. The way the units are all situated, you don't necessarily park in front of your door either, which really sucks grocery day! Us, we have to walk 500 ft or so uphill, and I am disabled!
I could go on and on with my gripes. If you have more questions, feel free to email me. Where are you coming from?

Kristi :thewave:

When I first moved hear I waited fifteen months to get substandard housing and an additional six months for Glenn Forrest. If the list is not too long it will probably be worth the wait. Although living on base has it's advantages.

I love reading how all of you southern marylanders come together. Man, this is Southern Living. I mean I was getting teary eyed until I started wondering if Nikki came back to read any of the responses  All this love is here for her, I remember how I was embraced when I first joined the forums

Question for those in the military, do you only shop at the base grocery store for food or do you go to Shopper's (I love that place)? I know rack'm will ask why do I want to know lol so I will say because I have a fear of separation and want to make sure that the outside mingling is balanced here on the forums.
