PC's on the decline...

"Consumers aren't impressed anymore with bigger hard drives or faster processors. That's not as exciting as a bigger TV," Katayama said. "And in Japan, kids now grow up using mobile phones, not PCs. The future of PCs isn't bright."
If he says so.

I'd love to see some Japanese kids build a spreadsheet, website or powerpoint presentation on a cellphone. Maybe do their payroll on their TV or something.

Yes, it is. I've been noticing that here at our business too. Power users are opting for portable power, not laptops or desktops. Most of our overseas travelers won't even take a laptop anymore unless they absolutely have to, using a BlackBerry or iPhone instead.

True, but they still have a PC at their office or home, right?

I'll tell you what surprises me: I'd have thought by now the desktop would start going the way of the dinosaur and everyone would have laptops instead. Unplug it and take it with you pretty much wherever you go, and especially now with aircards and wi-fi all over the place.

They do have laptops, but rarely user them if they have a BB. I would think they still have one at home, but for the family, not so much themselves.

With the prices of laptops where they are, I'm also surprised more folks don't have laptops at home. Only a few dollars different from a desktop, unless you are a power user/gamer. Less real estate on the desktop, portability, connectivity almost anywhere.... I have a desktop at home now, but my next device will be portable.

depends on the use of the machine!

We are an all development shop and our programmers would laugh at us if we handed them a blackberry to take on the road to do thier work with.

Blackberry's, iPhone, smart phones they are all just toys. It is too difficult to created feature intensive documents, near impossible to program on.

they are good for email. Too many people with a highly inflated sense of self importance feel the need to use them at all functions. They purchases the latest toy on the market so they can merrily use it while driving around in a humongous SUV and park it infront of thier McMansion. Unfortunately the bought all of these with high hopes, and no research. Now they just whine and complain about it not meeting thier high standards. So when the NEWEST model comes out, they will improperly throw out the old one, killing the environment some more, to buy the latest and "greatest" yet they will still be unsatisfied.

Sorry. It is a rant. Flame away. I am in a bad mood today.

You have to admit though, FAD technology is getting rediculous! Ever think about what goes into the soil or ground water when you throw out any random piece of electronics?

People will recycle a plastic bottle but not a PC/MP3/McToy

...oddly enough....I vote republican.

:snort:

I thought you couldn't just throw stuff like that away - I thought you had to recycle it or something?

Anyway, I'm not a big Blackberry fan, either. I thought about getting one, but didn't see any point in it. If there's an emergency that needs to be dealt with right away, I get a phone call, not an email.

... was the worst PDA I've ever had. No music, video, podcasts, etc.

It's just another way of company control. The iPhone is a waste.

I personally like laptops and tablets, but I still perfer my desktop. You can't load up SimRacing on any laptop. I perfer my desktop to anything, BIGGER keyboard, easier to use.

The people who take iphones and blackberries with them on trips in place of laptops are the people who don't really need to be taking anything at all. If they had a real need to do work they would have a laptop with them.

I think the biggest reason that pc sales are declining is that the rate of new technology introduction is declining. You can keep your pc for longer now then ever before without having to worry about new applications not functioning. As long as what they have is doing the job, most people aren't going to run out and buy something new.

Maybe they use gotomypc.com, it allows you access to your pc from anywhere you have a web connection, so there is no need to carry a laptop unless you want to carry one.

Wow, that sounds like spam...
