GULFPORT, Miss. (March 24, 2014) Petty Officer 3rd Class Bernard Washington, a yeoman and 2007 Westlake High School graduate from Waldorf, Md., is serving in the U.S. Navy as part of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74 specializing in advance base construction, battle damage repair, contingency engineering, humanitarian assistance and disaster recovery support to fleet and unified commanders. Construction Battalions, more commonly known as "Seabees," are the premier military engineer units in the world today. Born out of necessity in the early days of World War II, their exploits are legendary. This legacy is carried on today by the men and women of the Naval Construction Force who build and fight. For over 70 years, the Seabees of the Naval Construction Force have been deployed around the world, around the clock and have defended America at all times.
