Did your son volunteer any of his time to be a member of the yearbook staff, where he could contribute his ideas to making a wonderful book for himself and for everybody else?

When I was a senior our yearbook cover had a rainbow/tie-dyed type of thing going on. I didn't think much of it, but every other year the covers were blue (our school colors were blue and white). The thing that I thought was stupid was that the pages that are meant to be signed were bright blue, but when you touched them they turned pink and faded black to blue. Well, obviously in the summer many yearbooks got left in cars and the pages stayed bright pink. 11 years later and mine's still pink. And for what it's worth, I was in high school in the late 90s and they were $50.

Dont you have to take yearbook as a course? In my highschool it was an actual class you would take and you could only take it after passing videoagraphy or a photography course.

I was on the yearbook staff in HS, and yes - it was a class - but back then, it was not required that you take a videography or photography class first.

I guess what I'm getting at is this: for all those kids who are complaining about a bad yearbook, all of them - in one way or another - could have worked on it to make it a book that they'd be happy with.

They could have taken photos, worked on the layout, contributed to the design, had input to the theme ..... done *anything* to make the book representative of them, and something that they'd be happy with.

Usually, it's the kids that do absolutely nothing, that are the loudest complainers.
Having said that, I'd have to agree that an orange book, for a school that has white and green (or is it blue?) for their school colors is a bit odd. But if enough people had provided their input from the beginning, you can bet that the yearbook would have a different cover on it today.

They price is a bit high, too, but pricing for a limited print book does cost a pretty penny.

They work as a group, so you can't guarantee anything would have been different had someone with taste been a part of the committee. That's why I prefer a dictatorship when I'm working on a project.

covers

I don't even really remember my yearbook covers. What's more important are the pictures inside it.

As for the cost... it might be too late for the poster but in the future there could be fundraisers to help lessen the cost of the yearbooks.

My mom made me pay for a lot of that kind of stuff or at least keep track of what I owed. I had a paper of additions and deductions on a wall in her bedroom. Bank of mom. But after I got my money from people for graduating I paid her back. I never got a high school ring because I didn't want to pay for it and I'm glad I didn't. I don't think I would have worn it while in college and I don't think that I would wear it now.

I took the yearbook class when I was in high school. Worst experience of my life! All I can say is that a bunch of us "student staff" as they would call us were pissed. Cause the Editor that teacher put in charge change every page to make it the way she wanted it. Oh by the way can I say that she was in huge amount of pictures. Oh I hatedmy senior yearbook.
3/4 of the way thru the yearbook I told the teacher off, asking what the damn point in doing anything when its all about the editor. I also said to the teacher let the editor create the yearbook herself since that how its being done now! Lets just say I was on the teachers crap list after that. I know its the editors job to over see the project. However, she would take a whole bueprint page and revamp the whole thing. She made sure certain ppl she didnt like was not in any extra pic, as well making sure she and her crew was in most of them.. Thats what happen when catty girls get put incharge!! Noone else opinions matters!

Ok, I looked back at my yearbooks....havent been opened in 15 years. Yes, all four of them were at least $80 in 1984 to 1988. None were in the school colors. But I am proud to have them. But....then we had a different attitude about it. Almost everyone here is commenting on a public school yearbook. And complaining about costs of invitations($250) and rings ($450). (Senior pics- Sitting fee of $120 and crazy costs for photos) I was at a private school in DC, and the costs listed are right in line with what my mom paid for my graduation. I even checked with her about it yesterday. Her comment is that you all have not had to pay for much for twelve years, and now all of a sudden you're getting hit with the bills. Private school parents are used to the costs.... And before you say it, my parents were not rich. They didnt have much money. It was a question of safety, because the high school I would have gone to in PG was in a pretty awful neighborhood, thanks to busing.
It's all about perspective. She and I were thrilled that the costs havent gone up too much. You all are quite lucky!!!

Oh, and about the yearbook, the kids should put up or be quiet. Take the initiative and be a part of it, or don't complain.

You make a good point in a round about way. I never got my year books for 10th and 11th grade (I was not in the US for my 9th grade year). I figured I would at least get my 12th grade year book thinking I would look at it on and off through out the years. Needless to say, I have not looked at my year book in I think 19 years.............. Even after this thread I probably could not even tell you where my year book even is in my house or my H.S Diploma (or even my college degree).
