Pilot's gun discharges on US Airways flight

A source told WCNC that the plane remains inside a hanger at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

A Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman reached by WCNC Sunday said the pilot is part of TSA’s Federal Flight Deck Officer (FFDO) program, which trains pilots to carry guns on flights. Andrea McCauley said the gun discharged in the cockpit, but she could not release how the gun was being transported at the time. She did not release the pilot’s name, but said he was authorized to carry the weapon and was last requalified in the FFDO program last November.

A statement from TSA said the airplane was never in danger, and the TSA and the Federal Air Marshals Service are investigating the incident.

Sure, the aircraft was never in danger when a gun discharged. Did it know where it was pointing or something? :sarcasm:

And how does an aircraft get inside a hanger?

I'd be surprised if this was truely an accidental discharge....... probably more of a negligent discharge. Guns rarely just "go off". I am sure the trigger was pulled in this case one way or another.

Yeah that one is a classic, been around for atlest 3 years now.

The guy has sued saying that the camera being in there and the way it was released on the internet has ruined his career because now he can't go undercover.

Supposedly is a former Tampa Bay Buc too.

Listening to him enunciate sounds like he's the guy who takes the drugs during the sting so the dealers won't get suspicious too soon.

I don't think they would let someone that stupid go undercover. Also, in reference to your earlier post, aren't ALL accidents due to some sort of negligence?

I was just pointing out that there are two different catagories and most people call negligent discharges, accidental discharges wrongly.

An ND is where the guns trigger is pulled, whether on purpose or not.

I agree 100%. When I was flying on combat missions off Lebanon in 1982, I carried a S&W Model 19 combat magnum in my life preserver assembly (LPA) for five months. I would wear it on patrol, and when I got back I would take the LPA off and hang it up in my gear locker. When I got home from deployment I opened the pocket on my LPA and saw that at some point the hammer on pistol had gotten cocked, probably by getting pressed by another piece of equipment in there while I was wearing it. But with nothing making contact with the trigger, even in that cocked and ready state, it couldn't go off.

My guess is this'll be another case of...

Copilot: "So, you're carrying?"
Pilot: "Yep".
Copilot: "Can I see it?"
Pilot: "Sure".
Copilot: "Is it loaded?"
Pilot: "No".

And the rest is history.

Well I think there was a case last year or the year before where a cop was carrying and had to do and MRI or CAT scan or something and the machine apparently just made his 1911 go off.

So is that negligence? I don't know, who would of known.

First, when you have an MRI or a CAT scan, you're in a hospital gown and have no metal on, so there's no way a cop was getting an MRI or a CAT scan with a loaded 1911.

I think what you're referring to Maine Trooper Mark Coleman. He was arrested for reckless conduct with a firearm waiving a gun around at a public event last September. Subsequent to that he had an MRI done, which showed that he was suffering from frontotemporal dementia.

I understand the part about the robe or gown, and I have been searching for the story for the last 10 minutes or so but, that case you bring up is certainly not the one I am reffering to.

Hopefully I'll have some luck finding it soon, and I am not saying that the story is 100% fact but it is what was reported.

I had a friend who worked for a local Police department. He was called on one day to investigate an incident of an accidental shooting by another police officer.
One officer claimed his gun just went off by itself. The investigating officer said he placed the weapon on a table and just stared at it. After a while the other officer asked what he was doing and he replied , we are going to sit here and wait fo it to go off by itself again , unless you want to tell me the real story.
