Pizza Economics...

After seeing this thread this a.m., I went and got the stuff for pizza. Got to get the dough started.

There's a local pizza place I like but I think of it as kinda pricey; a 16" with pep/saus/mush/green peppers and onions, with tip, if I get delivery, is nearly $25.

So, off to the store I went to make one at my way and do some math;

Don Pepino sauce (used the whole can) $2.19
Boboli thin crsut $4.00
pretty much 8 oz of mozz $3.00
Most of a pound of ground sausage $2.00
1/2 fresh tomato $1.00
1/2 thing of fresh mushroom $1.00
1/3 package of fresh spinach $1.00

Total goods; $14.00
Less cooking

So, while I was surprised it costs as much as it did (I am not much noted for spending much time considering grocery prices) it's still a good bit less than call out and, my pizza had a HELL of a lot more stuff on it and was a better pizza. I shoulda taken a picture; sum##### musta been 2" high.

Gotta remember 2 things:
The pizza store buys in bulk, so your price for ingredients seems more expensive. If they bought the way you did, the price of a pie would be way more than $25.

The price of almost all ingredients has gone up astronomically in the past few months. They pay much more for flour than they ever have before. Look at bread: just about doubled in price in the last few months.

All that said: yeah, this thread is making me hungry... gonna go get some of those pricey ingredients!

FYI, I am over my Boboli fixation. Giant has fresh dough, ready made in the deli section. I keep that in the fridge, then just pat it out and make pizza whenever I want. Makes a pretty good crust, especially when you grill it.

Saw that. I haven't tried it, been disappointed with frozen pizza dough before.

If I ever make a homemade pizza I always add a special ingredient to the crust.

Cinnamon is amazing!

Oh man, I'm stuffed. Just had a homemade pizza. Took Vrai's advise and got the crust from Giant. Wasn't bad, but I had the oven just a bit too hot, 500. The top got done perfectly, but the bottom could have been much more done. Crust was better than I could have made.

Used both mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, onion and pepperoni. Chased that down with a BlackBeary Wheat beer.

Ok, I'm going to waddle into the tv room and crash now.

Ya know, I used to buy those Chef-B'r-Dee(sp), make your own pizza mixes, in the box, and doctored it up from there.....I guess they still make those. Haven't looked in a while....

They still sells them. You can find them in the Spagetti's (spelling?) sauces section.

amazingly.... if you take a pita and lay it flat then add your sauce and toppings... its yummy! good for kids also cuz they can make their own..

pop em in the toaster oven

I've been making my own pizza for years. Most of the time I use the Pillsbury pizza dough (in the roll section) and either make a tomato sauce mixture or if I'm in a hurry, I'll use Ragu or some other jar sauce and add things to it. I spray the pizza pan with Pam, etc. and lightly coat it with cornmeal. I precook the crust for about 5 minutes and then put the sauce, whatever and cheese on it and then cook for about 9 minutes....all at 425.

:yeahthat: .....
