Plants for around the pool

Lots of good suggestions. One thing to watch out for is planting flowers as with them will come bees.

Below are some things I didn't see mentioned already (or missed if it was):

Variegated liriope (also called monkey grass) is a great low-maintenance, easy-to-grow plant:

If you want a grass for full shade, you can't beat this one:

For flowers, dianthus is a good hearty grower. Very low maintenance and grows easily in a variety of environments. Just be aware most are perenniel varieties but there are also annual, bienniel and shrub variations.

I also love everything in the daisy family: Echinacea (coneflowers), rudbeckia (black-eye susan), Shasta daisies, etc. All are easy to grow and pretty pest resistant plus will tolerate some shade. Coreopsis is another one. 'Moonbeam' is an awesome variety. They've also come out with some beautiful compact varieties that are extremely hardly like this one:

Astilbe is a wonderful plant that grows very compact and does well in partial shade, too.

Good luck and happy planting!

Hmmm, didn't even think about variegated liriope or dianthus but they would look great and don't get tall at all. We planted them both in our other gardens but now that you mention it, maybe I'll plant some dianthus near the pool too. They've both held up really well in the extreme heat we've had this year, just like my day lilies have. I should've gotten a job at a nursery for discounts with all the planting I've done since moving here.

A blood good maple would be nice to give color and shade throughout the summer. Compacta hollies are always a good hardy, easy to care for varitey that are dwarf and won't grow out of control. Also, crape myrtle comes to mind. Stay away from azeleas in the sun.

Pool is finished and they put the water in yesterday. :yahoo: :yahoo:
The first load that came from Calvert went into the pool at a perfect 78 degrees, but the second load from St. Mary's brought it down to about 75. No worries though, I took the plunge and went for my first swim and it was great.
Have some grass to plant and landscaping to do, but at least we'll get a few weeks use out of it this year.
Thanks for all of the plant advice. I'm sure we'll be using several of the options. I like the monkey grass and have a perfect place for about 5 plants of that. Hosta should be coming this weekend via generous sister-in-law. Day Lilly is a good option and have a spot for about 3 of those. Five plants of Pennis Grass will round out the initial line up for this year and then we'll see where we are.

Sounds great, post pics after you've planted! :yahoo:
