What exactly is your definition of a "player"? I hear that term applied to men a lot and as far as I can tell it means a guy who isn't interested in a serious relationship, just wants to fool around. Is that right or am I missing a component?

Women say it like it's a bad thing, so it surely has to be more than just a guy who doesn't want to get in a relationship right this minute?

I would add to your definiton that they play around with different women at the same time. I think that's why it is perceived as a bad thing.

I always thought it just meant "playing the field", openly dating lots of people but not looking for a relationship.

Girl says player is now more someone who plays with hearts. They are still playing the field but they let several of the girls they date think it will lead to something more, or that they are in a relationship with several at one time.

He's playing with the whole field at the same time. It's not a bad thing if he doesn't want a serious relationship, it's another thing when he's playing several women who don't know that and he's planting seed in the whole field.

I believe a "player" is a man who is capable of making each woman he happens to be with at the moment "feel special" and like "she is the one" when in fact she is simply the one at the moment. This doesn't make him a bad man, but if a woman is dating in order to find a man for a monogamous, commited relationship she will most surely feel "played" when she eventually figures out she is but one of many that he is making "feel special". On the other hand, if you are a woman simply looking for a man who ignites her spark, but you aren't looking to settle down and be in a a serious, manogamous relationship then you could very well enjoy "a player" when you are in his company.

I think of a player more like a man playing a bunch of women, and they don't know about each other. Then they are getting played, and feelings get hurt.

Don't let looks fool you. I know a guy that is ugly enough to stop traffic. He has women fallling at his feet. It's totally his fun loving attitude and happy dancing feet, because he really does have a face only a mother could love. He currently has 3 women he's playing Seriously, even one of his women he's playing says he's as ugly as homemade sin. Whatever that means

Sure. But 'player' doesn't necessarily mean 'treats women badly' or 'runs through a lot of women'. Those are certainly implications of some of its uses, perhaps of its most common uses. But it can also refer to a guy who attracts women easily, whom women find charming, who would have access to desirable women (even if he's loyal and in a committed relationship). I've heard the term used in many different contexts to refer to many different things about a guy's behavior or opportunities.

The main, or at least consistent, point of it is that this man has better luck with women than other men or another man in particular. In what sense he does depends on the context of the term's use. It could be that he's more desirable and has or could have a hotter girlfriend. It may be that he more easily gets away with moving from one woman to another.
