Plaza Tolteca

Went there with my mom today for lunch. I am seriously tempted to go back for dinner -- it was really damn good! Haven't been a big fan of mexican restaurants around here since growing up in southern California but I will be visiting this place a ton. I fear I will be going in there to take home street tacos anytime I am running errands :dye:

Went with the famiily there last Friday. Parking lot was full. Inside was packed, however the service was surprisingly quick considering. It was the best mexican food we've eaten since leaving San Diego in 2002. And the prices are great. Looks like that's where we will go from now on.

Pete and I had lunch there today - he had the carnitas street tacos and I had the carne asada tacos. Very good! It seemed slowish but nothing unbearable; the place was packed.

Like Bohman said, the front desk is a bit of a cf with people paying - our waitress took ours up.

Will definitely go back. :yay:

Being Mexican and Southern Californian I must say this is the closest to Mexican food that I have found out here in good ol St. Mary's County. I REFUSE to eat at Monterrey's, Salsa's and Cerro Grande are bearable. I just have to make sure to tell them not to put any of that nacho cheese crap on my food. Where did that even come from anyway?!?

I'm a plain ol' generic white girl who's never been to San Diego or tasted authentic Mexican food. Please forgive me, but to my untrained palate Plaza Tolteca tastes just like Monterey's, Salsa's, and Cerro Grande (I've eaten at all four). Can someone please explain to me the difference?

I can only speak for the tacos I had, but usually you get a crisp corn shell or flour tortilla with ground or shredded meat and the usual fixin's. These tacos came with a very thin grilled corn tortilla and the filling was marinated steak bites (or carnitas like Pete had) with chopped cilantro, lettuce and onion (no cheese). That is similar to what you'd get in CA from Mexican people serving out of a trailer on the side of the road, which is always the best Mexican food.

Those tacos gave me hope for the rest of the menu items. Not that I snub Americanized Mexican food because I love that, too, but this would be considered authentic.

Yep, never had cheese on a real Mexican taco or onion. Usually greasy and cooked in an old plow disk. This is in Mexico of course. They were good though. Usually chicken. Maybe something else if it was darkish. The tamales they came around house to house and sold in Yuma were awesome. I usually bought them out.

vrailblonde definitely said it best! It's about the options and how they prepare it. Corn tortillas instead flour (for tacos), cilantro instead of lettuce, no dang nacho cheese sauce (lol if you can't tell that severely bothers me). It's things like that which catch my attention and get a place my approval. There are certain things I will never try at a restaurant though; tamales and enchiladas. Even in So Cal they're never as good as someone who makes them at home. Although some panecerias (Mexican bakery) can have decent tamales.

Aaaaand now my mouth is watering.

I didn't see any, but what about a quesadilla? I mean you can get just cheese  or like the chicken & rice? It just has cheese sauce on it.

He doesn't do tortillas or rice. I'll google for their menu. Thanks for replying. I need to email you about something.
