Pneumonia

yeah yeah
Hey there everyone. Just wanted to see what people are saying with those who have had walking pneumonia before. I was diagnosed November 1 with pneumonia. However, had it brewing for about 3 weeks before (mid October) that and didn't go to the doctors because I thought it was allergies. I was treating with OTC stuff, which naturally didnt work- so that is when I went to the doctor.

Either way, was first put on a zpack and a rescue inhaler, didnt do crap. Was then moved on to a high dose of augmentin and to keep using the rescue inhaler. The augmentin made my "body" feel better, but the breathing issues (the not being able to take a full breath) were still present. I called and they RX'd another inhaler which I still have. I have got a "bit" better over time, but still having breathing issues, albeit not that bad, but still there. They sent me to a pulmonologist, and was asked if there was mold in my house. I told her yes and the landlord was refusing to fix it. She said that is what was probably causing my issues. Fast forward to now, we have been out of our place for a week and my breathing issues are still there...

After all of that background.. I guess with pneumonia, how long does it take to get over this mess? For real.. this is so beyond what I ever imagined with pneumonia. Blah. any insight would be good.. (and yes, I have asked the dr and they said it can "take a while") as I have never had or dealt with pneumonia so I am at a loss of what is up.

As you've already been told... it could take months. It WILL take longer if you don't rest and eat and drink healthy.

Tips & Warnings

Take it easy. Chores will still be there after you get well. If you push yourself while you have pneumonia, you may lengthen your recovery time by two or three months.

There are a lot of factors in there like, age, history of smoking, inactive life style. The list goes on, and on. The older a person is, the longer it takes to be rid of it. It sounds like your Doctor has done a good job on his antibiotic choices. He has the bases covered. Levaquin is also a good choice, but that stuff keeps me awake at night. I wish you well.

I got a pneumonia on 30 mar 13! Checked myself into St Mary's ICU for 56 days. The made me come back to life 3 times; essentially all of my organs, lugs, kidneys, heart shut down because of the pneumonia. Missed diagnosis by Dr. I spent 56 days in ICU, St Mary's, 3 weeks in Hadley (in DC), and finally 4+ months in Rehabiliatation St Mary's Nursing Center. Wasn't supposed to live or even walk for at least another year, but due to the wonderful PT specialists @ St Mary's and ICU nurses, I now walk and get around. If you spend more than 30 days comatose, you loose all of your muscles, movement of hands, legs, feet etc. Not good! I had to buildup all muscles again; and they still are not 100%. I go to PT 3x a week still, but I am alive. So do not mess with PNEUMONIA. Do whatever you feel needs to be done to get it fixed. My lungs are @ 44% capacity, and kidneys are 33.3%, because of pneumonia! Nothing to mess with! Just my take on this..!

Nonsmoker, 34, pretty active in daily life, always on the go. I have heard of Levaquin for pneumonia also- but that has not been tried. The pulmonologist said that they are doing a repeat xray on friday because she saw the issue in my lower left lobe. RX'd prednisone and singular.. so. Yeah.

Wow! You have had a really hard time this year, and I am glad to see you are still with us. I had pneumonia 3 years ago. It was pretty awful, but nothing compared to what you have gone through. There is a pneumonia vaccine now, have gotten 2 so far, and I will get one every year.

You sound like you have great attitude, stew. I wish you the best and a continued and speedy recovery.

I've been out of Family practice for about 3 years now, but I've never heard of an every year vaccine for Pneumonia. I got one when I was 45, and can get another one before the age of 65. So things must have changed.

Actually, I looked it up. You don't generally get one but 5 to 10 years, and then one for 65, and older, like you said. I don't know why they gave it to me 2 years in a row. I used to smoke, but have quit; maybe that is why, and I had recently had pneumonia. I assumed it was yearly. Thanks! Now, that is one less ouchy at my next annual exam!

Had pneumonia once about 12 years ago, sickest i was ever in my entire life. Thought i was going to die. Luckily mine wasn't as bad as some of the above posts. When diagnosed in the ER, my first question and concern was for my family was Oh my God I hope this isn't contagious. Dr. said no its, not, so i asked him how the hell did i catch it? His reply was i don't have the slightest idea. Definitely very bad stuff. Hope all gets better with everyone.

Ornery is not the right definition for you:
or·ner·y

1.irritable: uncooperative and irritable
2.insufficient: meager, whether out of poverty or lack of generosity
3.common: ordinary

You fought back, and had the will to live. No question. You are a strong person, stew, and I have a feeling you will live to a ripe old age! I love when I read great stories on this forum. You are one of them. I am truly happy for you.
