My oldest (8) wants one for Christmas. Anyone have any experience with them? The thought scares the bejesus out of me but I realize I may just be being protective.

I think you have every right to be protective. A kid in my neighborhood just wrecked one and broke her jaw. She lost control and ran into a parked car. She's about 12.

Jaw wired shut.

Screw that! I have a nice Harley UltraClassic for sale. Get him that. I'll make you a great deal.

Battery powered I assume? J has had one since he was 6 and is just fine on it. He's getting a "real" dirtbike for Christmas. I would think it depends on his coordination/motor skills as to whether or not he's "ready". Just keep an eye on him and set and enforce some ground rules.

Yeah battery powered. Razor makes one that's geared toward kids that I'm thinking about.

I'll put it to you this way.
My kids have go carts, dirt bikes, scooter, skate boards, roller skates etc.
My 2 oldest 12 asked for those pocket bikes last year for Christmas and my husband said H3ll No, yet he is the one who has purchased everything else for them. He said they are way to dangerous...

Oh and we live on a little over 3 acres.
