Veterinarians Urge Caution After FDA Receives Reports of Thousands of Pets Sick, Hundreds Dying from Jerky Treats

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Veterinarians from BluePearl Veterinary Partners are urging caution after the Food and Drug Administration issued a request for members of the general public and their veterinarians to send any information they have if their pet has become ill after eating jerky treats.

Since 2007, the FDA says they have received reports of 3,600 dogs and 10 cats becoming ill from eating jerky treats in the U.S. Approximately 580 of those pets have died, according to the FDA.

Most of the jerky treats involved in the illnesses have been from China.

Doctors from BluePearl Veterinary Partners are encouraging people to be aware of treats made from jerky tenders or strips made of chicken, duck, sweet potatoes or dried fruit.

Additionally, people should take their pet to a veterinarian immediately if they notice signs of lethargy, decreased activity, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus), increased water consumption and/or increased urination.

“As always, anytime your pet is exhibiting abnormal behavior or symptoms of sickness, take him to your family veterinarian or nearest emergency veterinarian as soon as possible,” said Dr. Neil Shaw, chief medical officer of BluePearl Veterinary Partners.

Potential jerky pet-treat related illnesses should be reported online or by calling the state FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator.

So this has not been narrowed down to any particular brand name(s)?

Dunno.. that was why I asked. I have penty of Family with Dogs and wanted to pass that around. I'll google it here in a bit and see what I can find.

My daughter is googling it now, she says they haven't found the source, but I'm wondering how they know it was even made in China?

I'd say folks with sick pets going to the vet and the Vet asking if they may have introduced anything new to their diet. Just guessing of course.

Editing.THen the vet may have asked to see the product and narrowed it down to where it was made.

Symptoms observed within hours of eating the treats include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased activity, increased water consumption and increased urination, the agency said. Severe cases have involved kidney failure and gastrointestinal bleeding, the FDA said.

Sounds a lot like the symptoms of rat poison or antifreeze.

I lost a cat in August and he had all of these symptoms and was actually turning yellow. It happened so fast, there was nothing they could do. Since he was neither exposed to rat poison or antifreeze, they said it was pancreatitis and liver failure.

That's true, I've had 3 into the vet for various things over the past 3 months and some of the questions they ask seem sort of strange, but I'm sure there is a reason for asking. Shame animals can't talk and tell us when they start to feel bad.

Just saw a news report, they seem to think a common link is Chinese treats made with chicken products.

I hope it does not kill as fast as antifreeze. When I was younger I killed a couple of skunks with that stuff that were getting into my neighbors garage. I poured about a cup of antifreeze into a bowl and slid it under a workbench. The next morning I had to help him bag up "3" dead skunks. One never even walked away from the bowl. Just dropped down on all fours on his belly and died right there.

I hope this crap is not going to work that fast. :(

I think the brand Wagon Train may have been one of them. I no longer buy the jerky treats, no matter who makes them. I'll give Human grade before I do that.
