You have to be careful with calling cell phones during times of trouble, especially if you're not directly involved. A couple of years ago my teenage son heard that an aquantance had been involved in some serious trouble. So he called the boy's cell to see what was up. The BCI was calling our house immediately thereafter, and setting up interviews with my son. Not a smart thing to do.
I'm pretty certain that either the family or the police would have thought to try his cell.
