Remind me of the significance of the red chevrons? A few NJP's under their belts?
From wiki:
In the United States Navy prior to June 2019, enlisted Sailors in pay grades E-4 to E-9 were authorized to wear golden rate insignia instead of red if they met the requirements for good conduct service. Those Sailors in paygrades E-4 to E-6 who had met good conduct service requirements were also authorized to wear collar insignia and cap devices with gold chevrons on their service uniforms. On 1 June 2019, golden rate insignia began to be worn by all Sailors with 12 years of service or more, regardless of disciplinary history.

I think there was a movement afoot to do away with either the gold stripes or the red stripes in a kind of "everybody gets a trophy" type thing. More along the lines of schools that did away with honor stoles (which were by and large gold) because it made the non-achievers "feel bad about themselves," or something.

As far as the Chief is concerned, he's got at least 8 years in, but less than 12, so maybe it's time-in-grade, rather than a minor indiscretion in his jacket.

I say "minor," because I know after I got out, almost anything could get you booted out of the Navy. They did so freely, and with abandon. I don't know if they're still in that mode, or it's just being conservative that can get you drummed out. I'm kidding. Mostly.

USCG was easy in the 80's. E-6 and below... red. E-7 and above... gold. I had heard stories of 'slick arm' Chiefs, but never met any. Supposedly they were in the electronics ratings.

What ever happened to that massive Political Cartoons thread?

There were some pretty good memes in there. I knew I should have grabbed some while I had the chance.
