Poor Rassie

Got into something that made her highly allergic. Last night around 2:00 we got up with her and her face was swollen up big time. This a.m., face was swollen and within a few minutes, she had hives all over. Couldn't feel them, but you could see them. She's on Benedryl, per the vet, and doing better, but tired. DR stayed home with her today and I'll stay with her tomorrow. The Benedryl makes her really tired. Poor baby. Her neck was so swollen I had to take the collar off.

WTH.....

I never heard of a dog swelling like that.

What to you think did this?

I had a springer that was snake bitten and swelled a little in the face but....never took the collar off.

Weird, man

Wow. I wonder what happened. Benedryl is designed to make you sleepy, and I am sure it helps her body to rest. Poor sweet Rassie

She ate two raw asparagus. DR dropped the first one on the floor and she ate it, so he gave her another. She REALLY liked it. Whenever the t-storms rolled in this a.m., I gave her a half a Xanex, which was prescribed for her by the vet. About a half hour later, her face swelled up. She has had the Xanex once before with no effects, so I don't know which one it was, i.e., the asparagus that she had at 5:00 or the Xanax she had at 1:00 a.m.

Aw man, that is terrible cause, the Xanex is to calm her.
My P-nut goes through the same thing. I need to get her some meds or she is gonna stroke out on me.

I hope it was something else.

Aspargus? prolly not.

Give Peanut Benedryl during the storms. Rassie stayed very calm tonight during the thunder and she had the Benedryl in her. I think Rass got a spider bite or something. I really don't think it was the asparagus, either, though it had not been washed, so there could have been some chemical on it. Who knows? She had allergies when we got her and those went away. Under her legs (her armpits) was bright red when I got home, but after two Benedryl, the redness went away. That's how she was when we got her, also, and the vet gave her steroids (sp?) that made her very sick. I refuse to give her those.

Yeah steroids have bad side affects too.

Benadryl might not be a bad idea. I think some one else told me that.

Vet said one milligram for every pound. The normal benedryl (or generic) are 25 milligrams. Rassie weighs 72 pounds so vet said to give her three every 8 hours. We're just doing two and it seems to work. So, depending on how much peanut weighs, you'd figure it out. If she's less than 25 pounds, than maybe a half of one?

I give 18lb Shih Tuz 1 benedryl and fat Lab gets 3 shes 82lbs, but healthy.

For the storms the little one gets 1/2 of .25 Xanax and will come down in about an hour. Vet said I could give her a whole, but that scares me.:lmao:

Hugs to Rassie, poor girl. She'll be better soon:howdy:

I've had one of my very bright, bright boys :sarcasm: learn the hard way that flying, buzzing insects are not your friend. His furry face was so swollen, his eyes were almost shut. Same deal, benadryl. I keep stock around for these two, just in case. I wouldn't have been able to tell under all of the fur if he were swollen through the neck and he wore a harness just the same. :roflmao: OMG did he look pitiful! In retrospect, I probably needed the xanax. The biggest concern is anaphylaxis, so keeping an eye on her and her airway restriction is the concern, but it sounds like you're way past that.

Give her my love! :huggy: (and Momma too!)

I'll be here all day tomorrow with her! My boss is gonna LOVE this excuse. I'm giving her two in the a.m. and can't leave her alone after she takes them. Oh, and I have yard work to do. Feel free to stop by!

Good God:otter: that would be 4 of mine:drool::drool: That seems like a lot, but .25 mg for an 18lb dog, I guess it would be that.

3 Benedryl and I am:otter: Dosen't seem to bother the Lab:lmao:

That happened to my lab once and the only guess I had as to what happened was maybe she got stung by some ground bees.. She had been walking around in the fields nearby and the next thing i know, her eyes were just about swollen shut..

My mom kept an old dog crate on her porch with a blanket in it. Bees made a hive in it and her two dogs started snooping around and got attacked by the bees. Mom and I ran out and covered them with towels to get them in. Were picking out bees (and getting stung ourselves) from their fur. Went to the vet because both were in shock. Our lab/pit's head looked like something you'd see in a cartoon with all the bumps on the top of her head.

I hope Rassie is feeling better today!

She threw up about 3:30 a.m. She has that angry red rash in her armpits again and I gave her two benedryl around 6:00 a.m. She's definitely feeling and looking better than yesterday, but not "well" yet.
