Portland schools to allow birth control

I think 11 is a bit young to be prescribing BC pills. Seriously- how could any doctors or nurse practitioners at these clinics justify giving them to a child that young? Morality aside- exsposing girls that young to the hormones in those things can't be healthy. My daughter is 10 and can't even take a Tums without my permission.

I know teenagers went to the Health Dept here for BC without parents knowing when I was a teen. At least if they get prescription BC vs picking up free condoms there is some sort of STD screening too. The downside is, if the girl goes to the regular doc and is prescribed something that interacts with the BC pills (in most cases one makes the other less effective) and does not tell for fear of parents finding out. Well, they'd certainly find out 9 months later.

Girls were able to go to the Health Dept. and get BC w/out parental permission when I was in school too. However, a crapload of girls still ended up preggers by graduation.

I had a cousin who pretended to be going there so her parents would think she was getting Depo shots. She wanted to get preggers, marry BF, and move out of parent's house before she turned 18. Brilliant plan eh? She got 1 out of 3.

Yeah, she got the knocked up part. I had a friend in high school that intentionally got preggers too. Never understood it. However, she has done alot with her life. Didn't marry the bf but she has a wonderful husband now and a college degree. I'll give her credit. She did more with her life than most teenage moms. There are some teen moms that grow up and take care of their kids. I just wish that these girls would realize that these boys are not going to G.A.F.F. about them once they have these babies. Rarely do you see them get married and live happily ever after. However, my grandparents had kids in their teens. They were married first, though. But, that's the way it was back then.

If it says anything about my cousin's maturity, she lost custody of the child to it's father 10 years later. She had 2nd, 3rd, etc...chances and plenty of help and threw them all down the toilet. Thank God for her kids' sake that saner heads were there to intervene when things really got bad.

Back to original topic: if my teenager came to me to ask about birth control I'd grit my teeth but be glad she came to me rather than sneak. If my 11 year old came to me about the same thing I would hit the ceiling..and whichever older boy was daring to touch my baby. I am assuming older because of how boys and girls mature physically at different ages.

well, i don't know how much older he'd have to be. i know that by 6th grade i was definitely feelin the whole boy/girl girl interaction lol. That is 11 right? Kids are growing up even faster every year...i don't see why they shouldn't have the option of at least being on birth control JUST IN CASE. Parents can be quite naive. "My child would NEVER do something like that behind my back." well...you're wrong.

i was actually the type of kid that doesn't mind telling their parents pretty much anything because they were fairly open, and i usually didn't care what they'd say. They could say no to something and i'd just say i wasn't getting their approval, just informing them that its going to happen :yay: Even i have kept some pretty dam big things from my parents though because it was just easier . it happens, even with the "open parent/child relationship".

I remember two 12 year olds getting it on in the bushes near Esperanza Middle School. Girl had a tampon in. Girl had to get it professionally removed. :jet:

I didn't think 12 year old boys had enough control over their equipment yet. Dang, I think I was still taller than every boy in class at that age. :lmao:

I'm not naieve- you should have seen the crowd I hung around with back in the day! But 11 year old on BC? No way! That age is in no way mature enough to consent to sexual activity. I don't think the hormones in the pills would be healthy for a still maturing body. Besides, my daughter would probably knock the sheet out of any boy who tried to touch her non-existant boob.

Ha, i wasn't saying you were naive my dear. :yay:

i was just making a generalization which i'm sure u can agree with.

and i totally agree that the hormones are a bad idea that young.

Consent to sexual activity i disagree with, but meh.

what grade is sex-ed taught at now? I got it in seventh and that could have been too late for some people that were already active...I think that it should be taught at least a year sooner and they should start at least having condoms available at that age

It's 6th grade around here. It falls under PE/Health class.

This is where i have a problem with the system then. If they are going to teach about (safe) sex then i expect them to participate in the kids having the option for it readily available. Instead, the kid is expected to ask a parent or something and this isn't easy for most kids i don't think so then they go and have unprotected sex because it was easier that just asking a parent to take them to get protection.

I remember Sex Ed in the 8th grade. Teacher asked if anyone knew what a Nocturnal Emission was. I raised my hand. Teacher called me. I said "wet dream" as loud as I could. A few of the boys said you're such a dweeb and rolled their eyes. Teach said "actually, she's right." Boys crouched down in their seats and blushed. I cracked up laughing. My stepmommy and I had already had the Birds and Bees talk. :lmao:

I got a book too. I also overheard way too much from my 16 year old cousin and his friends.
