Potty Training

When Doug was little he'd get up in the morning and tear his poopy diaper off and start making abstract art. This came to an end when he pooped all over his favorite stuffed animal, so I threw it away. He cried and cried but I said, "Nope - you killed Ralphie by pooping on him and now he's dead" and into the trash he went. That was the last time Doug pooped anywhere except in a toilet.

But he was 2, not 3. I'm not criticizing you, Kimmy, but 3 just seems a little old for that. Is he just turned 3 or is he closer to 4? If he just turned 3, maybe just be patient with him. But if he's closer to 4, I'd spank his azz. Or, better yet, make him clean it up.

Sit in the bathtub with the curtain closed and fold clothes while he poops.

I with Vrai on this one too. I swore I was going to have to send my 3 year old to school in diapers. I tried absolutely everything and I read every freakin book. I just told her that diapers were for babies and if she wanted to do something (something that she wanted to do or wanted) then she had to be a big girl and use the potty. Low and behold, I swear overnight she just started going. I swear it's miracle.

Weird.

My chica started potty training well before her 2nd birthday. Now she can't get off the dayum thing! Each child is different though. I have read that boys are much harder to potty train if that's any consolation.

I'd say just use positive reinforcement and be firm. You've got to let him know that you're the boss. One thing is for sure; the constant chit on the walls and floors would get her a spanking.

Kimmy...my only suggestion is just be patient. Every child is different and they all start doing things at different ages. When my daughter was in daycare they had almost 4 year olds still in diapers so of course they were put in with the 2 year olds. I don't see where that helps. If these children see that these 2 year olds are still pottying in a diaper then they'll think it's okay.

I know it's frustrating...just be patient. As like another poster said it sounds like your little one is trying. I started to lose my patience with my daughter and overnight she just surprised me and starting going. I never threatend her, I told her that if she wanted to do big girl things she needed to start going potty on the potty chair. Now she thinks it's a HUGE deal to pee and poop in the toilet (by the way my daughter never used a little potty - she wanted to sit on the big toilet.)

It'll happen... BEST OF LUCK!

Kimmy, do you use the inserts for the "big toilets" or does he have his own potty chair?

Just an add on. I'm not sure how it is with boys but I started with the inserts for the big potty chair even the kind where you can fold it up and take it with you. She used it a few times but then decided she didn't need it. But as I said before...I'm not sure how it is with boys.

My twin boys were easy to potty train, they made a game out of it and it seemed like they were competing against each other. I never had any of the problems mentioned in this thread with them or my daughter. She was done at 2 right before the boys were born. Back then there weren't any pull-ups, we used training pants and minnie potties that looked just like the big one in each bathroom so they could take care of business w/o any help. When they wanted to try the big potty, I kept a stool for them to use so they could climb up.

The only problem I did have... the boys were so fascinated by the toilet action that they would try to flush small items to see if they would disappear.

He just turned 3 on June 6th. I guess I will have to go back to the timer thing. Every 30 mins.

I have the inserts for the big toilet on one level, his potty chair on another level, and this may sound gross but I have an emergency pee cup on another level.

I am just going to give it a rest this week and start again next week.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Instead of using both, try to figure out which one he likes best and stick with it for consistency.

My youngest was an abstract artist as well. She would be playing in her bedroom, 10 minutes later I would check again, and it was all over. Never figured out why, but she did stop after about 4 months of it.

My youngest just turned 3 May 2nd...and she is still in diapers. Been trying for a year to get her to use the toilet, and she is just refusing to use it. Almost daily she will sit on the toilet, read a book, (sitting like 10 minutes, and I let the water trickle outta the faucet too to stimulate her)...she gets up, says "All done" , flushes and proceeds to pee on the floor. Frustrating to say the least.

I do have 2 older daughters. My oldest was almost 4 when she finally got outta diapers. School was about to start and I told her that she needed to use the potty cause at school they dont have diapers and if she didnt use the toilet, she couldnt go to school. 3 days later she was 100% trained. My middle daughter was the same way....refused to use the toilet. At 3 I sent her to Head Start....by the end of the first week, she was 100% trained.

I swear, at least my stubborn kids, KNOW how to use it but just dont want to. With the youngest, I am pretty much putting her in pullups, putting her on the potty a few times a day, and asking many....and I figure, when she is good and ready, she will use it.

Good luck with the training...I know it can be VERY frustrating. Just have patience and he will figure it out sooner or later.

Boy are you a tough mom. My boys would go into shock. I tried the ridicule thing and my sons just started doubting themselves and wanted to quit trying. I guess every child is different.

just think, how many 20 yr olds do you know that where diapers? it will all happen in good time. Everyone figures out how to teach their child eventually, and everyone is doing it a different way.

Kimmy...giving it a rest for a bit helped in my case because I was getting frustrated and my daughter could see it too. Then one day...it just happend, she started going on her own.
