^this should have been in one of your bills....

IE, they can control your house temp, and cut power during peak.

Yes indeedie dooo.....When we lived on Homestead AFB in Florida, back in the 80's, they had....I dunno what you call them...governors,maybe... on all of the AC units (the houses there were all single family or duplexes.) You could hear entire blocks shutting down or turning on simultaneously. You could set your thermostat at whatever you wanted, but when it was your time of day for a shutoff, you got it, regardless. Florida Power was pretty expensive during peak hours. It got so you sort of knew the schedule.

.... called him up and he stopped by and showed me how the device that smeco had installed had turned the outside unit off.

so with the Smart Meter - SMECO installed an additional device  on your heat pump ?

no need it was cleared up, it was apparently an old program
Not quite... there are threads here about SMECO coming around last year and doing the following to folks that didn't bother to mail in or call to "opt out".

If I don't want a programmable thermostat, can I still participate in SMECO CoolSentry?
A programmable thermostat can help you save money — 10% off your annual heating/cooling bills. But in the event you already have one, or our installation technicians discover that incompatible equipment or poor signal strength in your area makes you ineligible for one, we can install a Digital Cycling Unit (DCU) on your outdoor central A/C unit. DCU participation also rewards you with $50 in annual SMECO bill credits, awarded June through October.

Yep. Folks were coming home from work to find that SMECO attached a DCU to their outdoor units.

Motion of Reconsideration with PSC

Md. Smart Meter Awareness Files Motion of Reconsideration with PSC

Jonathan Libber, president of Maryland Smart Meter Awareness (MSMA) today filed a motion for reconsideration with the Maryland Public Service Commission’s (PSC) regarding its opt out Order of February 26th. Although the Order provided Maryland ratepayers the right to officially opt out from having a smart meter installed on their homes, MSMA submits that BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power & Light and SMECO never justified their claim for substantial opt out fees. MSMA was the only involved party that raised very strenuous objections to the cost analyses presented to the PSC by the utilities. Following the hearing where MSMA showed how defective the cost proposals were, the four utilities all sent confidential cost breakdowns to the Commission and excluded MSMA from that filing. The parties failed to even provide MSMA notice that this was being done. That breakdown of costs became the basis of the PSC's Order in regard to the substantial opt out fees it approved for each utility. While the information in question was business confidential, MSMA had a confidentiality agreement in place with SMECO since last year, and could have easily completed ones for BGE, Pepco and Delmarva.

MSMA is essentially asking the PSC for a chance to review this material and comment on it. In the alternative, the motion asks the PSC to consider these costs as part of the base rate proceeding for the smart meter program. This would potentially suspend the final decision on opt out fees for 18 months and allow MSMA to more effectively argue for more realistic fees.

SMECO's "Advanced Smart Meter Alternatives, Respective Associated Costs, and Cost Recovery Proposal" which they filed with the PSC is located at http://www.scribd.com/doc/215229232/

These ridiculous fees are all about preventing people from opting out of their bull####. SMECO is supposed to be a COOP owned by the customers.

Thats how them b*tch's R
Wait a minute. I don't understand most of this but it seems that they want everyone to change their meters and pay for it. Also if you use the Interval Data/Modem Meter (Telephone Line ) you pay for that to be installed and the monthly fee for another telephone line? Is the only purpose of this to cut back on the people they send out to read meters? Will they be able to control your usage at all with this device?

I also don't get the tables with the monthly/one-time fees. Does how much you pay depend on the device they are offering or what? They list several devices. Are all of these available? I'm so confused!

company's, not only here but around the world. This is about control, period. They don't care about your health or your privacy.

I hate this. I find it intrusive and it feels illegal to charge me for something I don't have. I hope the MD rep listens, but I'll probably get a response back that it's "for the children" like always.
