Well, I guess we're all showing our age - I looked up the usage in the urban dictionary.

Even though people still and likely always will use the expression to imply that "all you do is take up space", the urban dictionary defines it as being visible, to show you belong, use your voice. A couple decades ago, the expression was "to show up" - ironically, ANOTHER phrase which normally meant to just exist and otherwise do nothing.
