I wouldn't mind a hybrid except that the Prius is so ugly. The other hybrids look good, but the gas mileage isn't that much better.

Ex said she got all the way to Fla on one tank in her Prius.

I call :bs:

The hybrid systems that they are using are efficient in stop and go, but not nearly as good on the highway (usually in the 30's). They gain efficiency by using regenerative braking to store energy when slowing and then use that energy to accelerate the car when you start back up.

Out of curiosity, I did some checking...DC to Jacksonville, FL (NE corner of FL) is >700 miles. The Prius has an 11.9 gallon tank. If you get 60 mpg and you use every drop of gas in the car, that would be 714 miles. Again, I call :bs:

I had the privilage to drive his ex's car right after she bought it.
According to the readout, I got in the mid 50s while driving a steady 55 mph.

I do like how it will shut down if it gets further than a few feet from the key ring.

Tracey's sister has a Prius... on the highway it doesn't do as well as it does in the city.. (it generates more electricity in stop and go traffic).. between here and Baltimore or Annapolis we get 51 - 52 MPG.. straight interstate would be a little less I'm sure, but not much. If we were in the city going from light to light all day it would closer to 60.

50 highway beats my 26.

I would still like to see the maintenance costs of the car over a 3 or 4 year period to see if the fuel savings are enough to make up for the repairs.

I wonder what it would cost to replace the batteries.

THIS is the perfect car to lease..

Batteries are supposed to last 5 years before needing replaced.. Personally I'd lease it for the same amount of time the warranty lasts.. then ditch it and get a new one. NEVER have to worry about the batteries that way.

I THINK the cost of battery replacement is in the neighborhood of $2500 or 3500 but not sure..

The PRIUS is a BIG car for something that gets that kind of mileage. Usually three adults in the car heading North.. and more then enough room, and it runs great with the three of us in it. THAT and the graphics on the dashboard, you can see where your energy is coming from to DRIVE the car, and what is generating electric to juice the batteries..

I think they want to do a Hybrid diesel car next, and they think they can jump the 70 MPG mark on a car close to full size..
