Protein

Hey all,

I've started a new diet and I need advice. I am debating on whether or not I should take protein powder with my fruit smoothies. Some people tell me to go for it while others seem to think it will make me gain weight. Confusing...

TIA

You should probably put this in the Health and Nutrition section. Anyway, what is your current protein intake in grams?

What are your goals?

Depends. I like to treat protein powders like any other food. Sometimes I'll mix it with water for a simple prtein drink snack. Sometimes I'll add peanut butter, fruit, milk, flax oil to make a smoothie meal. Protein is not a "supplement" to me. I have it everyday. Just like I eat meat, fish, poultry, which is everyday.
Having protein powder provides you with a convenient, healthy food choice. Easy to prepare and can be tasty too.
I recommend a "protein only" powder. Do not opt for powders that are "meal replacement" or weight gain" types. Just get protein. It leaves you with more options for preparation.
There are different types of protein to buy too. It can be confusing. There is whey, casein, soy, egg, etc. Don't buy into the hype. For the everyday person I would suggest a simple whey protein. Cheap and effective. I hate to say this but don't purchase your protein from Walmart or the grocery store. Order online or go into GNC, Vitamin Shoppe or like places. You'll get better quality.

Oops, sorry I put it in the wrong section!

I do not know my intake in grams. I eat lots of whole grain foods, steaks, chicken, ground turkey. I was just thinking this could be a way to lose more weight when working also with exercise.

There's at least one good thing about increasing your protein intake as part of weight loss program - it tends to curb your appetite.

From my meager experience, most people don't get enough protein in their daily diet, especially if they are trying to build muscle, and building muscle is vital to weight loss, since so many dieters lose muscle mass while dieting.

In any case, without more to go on, I'd just say it probably won't hurt unless you plan to really pack the powder in.

And if you're going to be exercising too, making sure to get enough protein ensures proper muscle building. Don't want your body going after existing muscle when it tries to build new.

Power/Points: 3201271 OK. My 2 cents. I hate gimmicky weight loss scams. Pills, diets, machines, etc. are crap.

I work 60+ hours a week. I pull 12 hour, rotating AM/PM shifts. I am married and have a 15 mo old at home. I spend every spare minute I have with my wife and kid.

My point? I still find time to train 5+ days/week. Sacrifice and committment, period. The whole family is involved in being fit. We make activity a priority.

Eating habits MUST take priority! You don't have to be an extreme dieter like Warneckutz but you have to be mindful. I like to teach simplicity. By keeping it simple you keep yourself sane.

Here are some easy guidelines:

Eat Breakfast
Eat your goal weight in protein, ie- 1gram/pound, split evenly over meals
4+ meals/day
Drink clear liquids mostly, ie water, not vodka
If you want to gain weight, eat more and don't discriminate
If you want to lean out, eat less and eat clean
Take supplements that work, ie multi vit/min, fish oils, extra protein, creatine (opt), joint formula
Eat to fuel your body and speed recovery. Don't focus too much on weight gain/loss. If you are active and exercising, this works.

Hope this helps.

A good starting point with protein is 1 gram/lb of your goal weight. Split over 4+ meals/day

The main rule of thumb is took in 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight to "maintain" what you have. Obviously, if you're looking to add a few pounds of muscle then you may want to learn towards 1.5 grams.

DPSNutrition has good prices for protein powder and if you ed up ordering a lot you won't pay much for shipping. (They're also located in PA so if you select regular shipping you can sometimes get it the next day :yay: ).

Bodybuilding.com is another way to go if you buy enough and use their on-line coupons. I stick with DPS for my protein powder purchases and usually use Bodybuilding.com for everything else.

A few protein brands you may want to consider are Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey (they've been #1 for a few years now), BSN's Syntha-6, CytoSport's Muscle Milk or Complete Whey, Dymatize's Elite protein, etc...

Good Luck! :yay:

I weigh 215. Does that mean I should take 7 times the dosage recommended on the jug? I read that there are no side effects but that dosage sounds excessive.

If you goal is to pack on muscle you should have a total of at least 1.5 g of protein in body weight in lbs. that you weigh. Remember to figure out the amount of protein you are getting from regular food sources too though.

If putting on muscle is your goal then you should be getting some where between 330-460 grams of protein a day.

It is a PITA, believe me I know, that is why I don't do it anymore, I have the same work schedule as BigFatty and there is just not enough time to do it right.

Excuses! If you make time for it, it can be done. AK, I eat 4 times during our hours at work! I also eat before I go to work and after I get home (which is usually after I train).
And I am just maintaining my weight! I need to do more due to the long hours! (I weigh 235 BTW)

Charles, no no no. This would be excessive.

Eating is like weight training. If you want to bench 315, you don't start off benching 315. Follow me?
The question to ask yourself is, "What am I getting for protein now?"
Hypothetically, let's say it's 120 grams/day on average. I would recommend trying to add an extra 30 grams/day to that. The continue to build onto that benchmark. The goal would be to get 1 gram/pound of goal bodyweight. This is a beginner recommendation.
As you get more advanced the requirements for everything do jump higher. Not ridiculously higher, but higher.

(I know you'll need some help with your 5 lb shoulder presses, however I am taking the night off) Feel free to take notes... (I will get notes from you so I can write more SOYG stories about how MightyMouse dumped the bar on some close-grip BPs)

P.S. Make sure I have a towel and the benches are clean after each set. (Yes, you need a towel for that foul, urine-smelling sweat of yours!)
