Adoptions at the tri-county animal shelter on 231 are $85.00, which covers shots, chip and spay/neuter. There's no application or anything.

Most of the AWLs (CAWL, SMAWL, etc) or ASPCA groups charge between $100 and $150 for adoptions.

What do you don't know about some of the animal welfare groups is that when a dog is heartworm positive they will treat the dog before placing it in a home. That costs way above the $150.00 fee that is charged. Also some of the dogs need special things done before being placed in a home. SMAWL doesn't make make money on the adoptions. The vet fees for a heartworm positive dog alone are(from this vet): $500 for a medium sized dog and $600 for a large dog. Link here for cost

Also remember that SMAWL took in many hurricane katrina dogs, and placed them in homes. Many of those dogs had health problems, that needed to be resolved before being placed in a home. They also don't have enough foster homes, and board the dogs that are not in foster homes at local kennels.

The dogs that leave SMAWL are now micro-chipped, and are spayed & neutered if it has not been done yet.

Excellent points! Also, remember that Tri-County receives funds from the government and rescue groups operate mainly on donations. Lucky Ones currently has a dog that was rescued from Tri-County because despite being a great dog with a wonderful personality he was rejected by several people when they found out he was heartworm positive and his future was not looking good. We are currently providing his treatment. Once completed, he will be adopted for the same amount as all of the others.

Guess they were getting complaints and was told the pups had "health issues" animal control couldn't tell me more.

I met some guy last weekend at Petco who was coming in with a puppy he got from the farmer's market. The dog looked terrible and I suggested he take the dog to the vet. He said he did and spent $1500 on parvo treatment and that over 20 dogs from the farmers market had parvo. I told him that looking at his dog showed that he dog also had mange. He was clueless but did finally leave Petco.

Why in the name of God would someone buy a dog or any pet for that matter, at a Farmers market? WTH! Where do folks draw the line? I think the Humane Society needs to be called.

I agree. I felt bad for a pup there and bought it for my ex bf for about 250.00. I felt bad for the pup it was the last one there and it too had green stuff coming out its nose. Thought about it then we went back and got the pup. Took it to the vet next day and it had pnemonia and if I remember correclty, only 10% lung capacity. Ended up being about 1800.00 in vet costs if I recall correctly, after all the appointments, xrays, perscriptions, etc... The dog is very high strung and over a year old - I wonderif all the strong PX's as a puppy did some brain damage  He's a highstrung knucklehead  but he does try super hard. He's a doll baby. When we took him to the vet. The lady there said that someone had been treating him with an antibiotic that you can buy overthe counter at a fish store. Its something you put in the fish tank. He said as a result, and abuse of such antibiotic, it created a new strain of a virus or something. Cute pup, but the poor guy was very, very, very sick. He was still happy and you'd never guess it except for sneezes and hacking here and there... but it took FOREVER to get him healthy and have clear drainage.

The shelter does at times also have grant money they can use to treat a heartworm positive dog, of course the dog has to stay there during the treatment, but it doesn't increase the cost to the adopter.

That's great! We just rescued Curly, possibly Akita/Rott/Chow mix, and he just tested heartworm positive too. Seems there are a lot more lately, about 50% of the ones we get. The 10 year old, long-haired, male shepherd we got a few weeks ago named Magic was adopted this past week to a great family. He was playful with the other dogs despite his age and a delight to have around the house. Hopefully, he'll have a loving home for the rest of his life.

So I just heard some horrible news in relation to the puppies that were taken from the farmers market on Saturday. Although it was great those puppies were confiscated I fear the shelter euthanized alot of the adoptable dogs to make room for these puppies that are probably sick and will have to live at the shelter until a court case occurs. This is a sad situation for all. The puppies will live at the shelter sick until God knows when and the other dogs that wound up there from other irresponsible, uncaring individuals were euthanized.

That really shows the need for another shelter. One measly shelter for 3 counties is not enough. Not with our growth rate.

The local rescues desperately need foster homes right now to deal with this situation. Please help save a life! Fostering is incredibly rewarding and rescues will pay for ALL vet expenses and food. All you need to do is provide the LOVE we know you have. If you have questions or would like to talk to an experienced foster family for more information, please PM me.
