question about poygraph testing

Quick question guys,

Anyone know about polygraph testing when it comes to what would happen if you rejected taking one? My friend called called by a private investigator asking him to take a poygraph test and he decided not to take it because a lawyer told him not to. He didn't do anything that wrong with breaking the law or anything and the P.I. wouldn't tell him what the polygraph test was for. So is it mandatory to take that test when a cop asks you to take it??

From what I understand, you do not have to take one if asked by the police. Polygraphs are inadmissable in court anyway.

If the police ask you to take one, no its not mandatory, and you can refuse it, but it is a good idea if you have nothing to hide. Now as far as taking one if a Private Investigator asked me to, I would tell him to kiss my grits. A PI does'nt really have any authority.

Why would anyone want to take a polygraph if it wasn't for their own benefit? E.G. job interview, etc.

Thanks for the imput guys, I copyed and pasted all your responses to him and he's so effing scared. He hasn't done anything seriously wrong lately. Just a couple things. Here are the things that I am worried about. He messes around with a lot of girls and a couple of these girls are minors but he didn't do anything but make out with them but some of the other girls found out that he was messing around with chicks behind their backs so they might be getting back at him. One other thing I'm worried about is that he went on his myspace website at our work which is a county governent computer and it had half-naked pics of girls on there so I'm wondering if they they tracked that down and told the cops. You think they would make a big deal out of that sort of thing?

First off a PI has about the same authority that I do when it comes to "telling" you or your friend what to do.

Even if the police were to come to his door, the response should be "I have nothing to say". Unless there is a search or arrest warrant presented, the response should not change.

It's that simple.

Tell your friend that if the PI calls again, he needs to tell the PI he does not wish to talk to him and that he requests the PI to no longer call. If the calls persist then your friend needs to go to the police and make out a complaint for harassment against the PI. It wouldn't hurt to tell the PI that you plan to do this if the calls continue....

ummm i hate to state the obvious, but if that isnt what this is about...itd still be a good idea to stop messing with minors and get those pics off his computer just to prevent trouble in the future because i do think they make a big deal out of that kind of thing.

The plot thickens a bit now and takes on a bit of a different twist! Your friend my have very good reason to be concerned as what you describe above is viewed in a very dim light. What you do at home on your computer is your own business (within reason) but corporations and the governement own our computers at work and have access and retain rights to anything on them. If someone yells POLY..............he better pay attention and before they yell that word they already know everything and probably much more than you personally know about this. Proceed with caution my friend.
