Similar situation. Wife cheated on me approx 6 months prior to her leaving me. Children stayed with me. She stayed with her boyfriend. Adultery, like everyone says, in the state of Md is a whopping $10 fine. Then you have to have proof. I had the proof. My own daughter, over 18, was going to testify against her mother. The only thing that would have got me was an immediate divorce and the loss of 50% of all that I've worked for that much sooner. BTW he or she still gets 50% in the state of maryland no matter what or when the divorce takes place. It's called marital property. Learned all this the hard way.

That makes me want to think twice before ever marrying someone...

Yep, the items acquired after you were together become a shared asset. Items or property that are owned prior to the marriage remain the property of the original owner.

Do yourself a favor and think 3, 4 and 5 times. The warning signs are always there - we just ignore them, thinking we can live with them or that they'll change.

However, Maryland is not a community property state (like California) which requires a 50/50 split. I have friends who have worked it out both ways, where the wife got very little, and also where the hubby took it in the ouch!
