My daughter has been getting her nails painted since about 3yrs old. It's nice to spend that together time doing them and she seems to enjoy it. I also let her have makeup at about 5yrs old but it's pretty transparent and is for "play" only.
Now at 9 she has a whole box of polishes and makeup. Between the two the nail polish is what she likes best and she does them herself. The makeup, she only has sporatic interest in and if it's on you really can't see it.
