Rabbit Hutch

We are thinking of getting a rabbit. It'll be an outside rabbit. Anybody have plans for a hutch? I want to do a wooden house with wire run area out front.

I hear if you give a rabbit a litter box like a cat they will use it. T or F?

Some will, you have to teach them to. I started with a litter box in his cage all the time and then left his cage door open.. Eventually he would hop in there to use it. Pretty smart little guy.

They do shed a lot and their hair is very fine. You also need to 'bunny proof' their space if they are indoors. I've had indoor and outdoor buns. Outdoors were not as friendly and you have to watch them in extreme heat..

.. If you get a male rabbit, be advised they spray and it's best to get them neutered

And you should also spay the female.

I just think people get rabbits and make them outside pets and they're forgotten about and don't get the attention they need.

They do use the litter box. They are very particular about their cage and will "potty" in one spot and prefer to use a litter box.

Why outside? Rabbits make nice indoor pets.
Two words...cat food

For that and other reasons, we couldn't let it have the run of the house and if we kept it caged in the house it would be more likely to be neglected, since the only place for a cage is the basement, where the children aren't allowed to play and where I try to avoid going. If it is outside, my boys, who spend more non-school hours outside than inside, could take it out and play with it.

The best rabbit hutch I ever made was made out of a big spool. I cut out one board in the middle and put hay in there for the bed and and I put rabbit wire around it with a door in front of the bed area, then hung a water bottle and feed cup. I put a heavy tarp on the top to keep the rain off of the cage. The rabbit absolutely loved it because she could jump around and around and it felt like she was going somewhere. I cleaned it out with a shop vac and could roll the cage anywhere I wanted to put it. Remember to put it up on bricks or blocks so the wood will not rot. I had a Siamese looking bunny and it was the best. Funny thing is, I can't remember what happened to her. It was in my younger years when I lived in Ridge before I got my horse farm. (CRS)

There is a rabbit rescue in Lusby. I sent someone to them 2 weeks ago. PM me if you want to to look up their info. I will be at the store after 11.
