Rabid fox

In my neighborhood :yikes:

I live off of Rt 6 about 2 miles from Lettie Dent Elementary. My neighbor called me because she knows I have little kids here during the day and she also was concerned I might have pre-K kids getting on the school bus in about an hour.

She called Animal Control about this fox in her yard, acting strangely and obviously sick. It wandered off up the street. AC caught it, and told neighbor that it was the third one in the last week or so...the other 2 were in Golden Beach (about 3 miles from here).

AC said it could be rabies or it could be distemper, but they don't test them unless there is known to be contact with a human or other animal.

When I lived down south we would just shoot them:smack:

They are everywhere, the population has exploded, a nice supressed .22 would be nice to have in these situations.

No need for the :smack:

Not a good idea to be handling firearms during business hours if you do home based child care. I can see it now...Surprise! You're being inspected! DON'T SHOOT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought my post was funnier.

Normally, if you see any nocturnal animal (fox, raccoon, possum and the likes) out and about in the open during the day it is typically rabid.

I keep a scoped and loaded .22 by the front door - we have had a rise of rabid Raccoon's and Skunk's dow by Zekiah Swamp the past 3 years or so.

That was my thought too. But it's so overcast today, I can see them venturing out....better safe than sorry in any case.

Pre dig a hole before you shoot that skunk, throw it in a trash bag and drop it in the ground and cover has fast as you can.

We have heard foxes behind our house at night, they make a funny hacking, coffing sound. Hubby fires shots into the air to chase them away,if he could see them he would shoot them. We also have a really cool owl that hoots every night behind our house. I love living back in the woods, in Hollywood. The foxes are bad to have around if you have pets that are outside during the day, if they are sick they may try to go after your pets. We have been keeping our dog in untill we are sure they are gone away from the house. We stay out with her when we let her out.

It's not unusual to have healthy foxes running around during the day.

(Not saying this one was healthy.)

But the generally stay near the woods. This one was around the house and then instead of running off into the woods, he went out to the street in the opposite direction.

I always thought that it meant they were rabid... that is until I had a racoon go in my dogs cage in the garage to get food during the day. I freaked out and it seems like alot of people, including animal control said the same thing... (speaking about racoons, anyway -- that when racoons have babies, they tend to come out during the day when babies are sleeping to get food. As it turned out, the racoon did have babies and was just getting food.

Huh - well I'll be... I always heard what I said above

Maybe it is a rule of thumb?
