‘But That’s What — What The Act Says’: Jonathan Swan Corners Rashida Tlaib Over Prison Bill That Would ‘Release Everyone’

Axios political reporter Jonathan Swan forced Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib into a corner during an interview, challenging her directly on her support for a prison reform bill that would “release everyone.”

[clip]

“In 2020, you endorsed the BREATHE Act, which is a series of proposals to transform America’s criminal justice system and create, quote, ‘a roadmap for prison abolition.’ The BREATHE Act proposes emptying federal detention facilities within 10 years. To what extent have you wrestled with any potential downsides of releasing into society every single person who’s currently in a federal prison?” Swan asked.

Tlaib appeared to laugh off the question, saying, “I think everyone’s like, oh my God, we’re going to just release everybody.”

Swan immediately objected: “But that’s what — that’s what the act says.”

Tlaib pushed back, arguing that her support for the bill was based on the fact that so many who were mentally ill were being incarcerated rather than being treated.

“Yeah, but did you see how many people are mentally ill that are in prison right now?” she asked.

“But the act that you endorsed actually says release everyone,” Swan continued to press Tlaib on the issue, to which she replied that it would be 10 years before the federal prisons were actually abolished and those incarcerated would be released.

Surprise: Alleged Jihad Terror Financiers Organized Campaign Events for Rashida Tlaib

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Ramallah), that most charming and patriotic of politicians, linked to Hamas? Inconceivable, no? No: the Washington Examiner reports that “two men who held key positions at nonprofit groups that were found liable in a Hamas terror financing scheme helped organize campaign fundraising events for Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) in 2018.”

What’s surprising about this is not that it happened: anyone who has paid attention to Tlaib’s public statements and actions over the years knows that this is just the sort of thing we should expect from her. What is surprising is that all this happened four years ago and only now has anyone taken any notice; apparently we are so accustomed to Leftist politicians hobnobbing with supporters of terrorist groups that this just wasn’t news.

Tlaib’s campaign event organizers, according to the Examiner, “were associated with a network of nonprofit groups that were found liable by a federal jury in 2004 for financing the terrorist slaying of an American teenager, David Boim, at a bus stop in the West Bank in 1996. A federal judge ordered the three groups to pay Boim’s parents a $156 million judgment for funding Hamas, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.” Getting a judgment was one thing, however, and getting payment was quite another: “the groups — the Holy Land Foundation, the American Muslim Society, and the Islamic Association for Palestine — never paid up. They shut down shortly after they were ordered to pay the landmark judgment to the Boim family. The Holy Land Foundation ultimately had its monetary assets seized by the United States, and five of its leaders were sentenced to decades in prison in 2008, for providing material support to Hamas.”

“You have all committed, as you all know, to transition the emissions from lending and investment activities to align with pathways to net zero in 2050,” Tlaib began. “Do you know what the International Energy Agency has said is required to meet our global 2050 net sterile targets of limiting global temperature rise to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1.5 degrees Celsius? So no new fossil fuel production starting today, that’s, so that’s like zero.”

“Please answer with a simple yes or no — does your bank have a policy against funding new oil and gas products?” Tlaib asked. “Mr. Dimon?”

“Absolutely not,” Dimon responded. “And that would be the road to hell for America.”

“Yeah, that’s fine,” Tlaib responded. “That’s why sir, you know what, everybody that got relief from student loans, has a bank account with your bank should probably take out their account and close their account, the fact that you’re not even there to help relieve many of the folks that are in debt, extreme debt because of student loan debt, and you’re out there criticizing it.”

Tlaib later claimed without evidence that Dimon “obviously” does not “care about working class people and frontline communities like ours, that are facing huge amounts of high rates of asthma, respiratory issues, and so much more, cancer rates are so high among my communities that I represent.”

Far-left Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) faced backlash Wednesday for comments she made this week when she said that Democrats could not be considered “progressive” if they supported Israel’s government.

Tlaib has an extensive history of anti-Semitism and has spoken at events where far-left activists have called for the elimination of Israel.

Speaking at an online advocacy seminar held on Tuesday by Americans for Justice in Palestine Action (AJP Action) and co-sponsored by American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Tlaib said, “I want you all to know that among progressives, it has become clear that you cannot claim to hold progressive values, yet back Israel’s apartheid government.”

“We will continue to push back and not accept this idea that you are progressive, except for ‘Philistine,’ any longer,” she continued.

Wall Street Journal:

Apparently banks now need to bow to Democratic policy priorities or risk lawmakers inciting a bank run. The good news here is that the vast majority of Mr. Dimon’s customers probably don’t take Ms. Tlaib any more seriously than anyone else does. Besides, isn’t the student-forgiveness plan supposed to be helping people so impoverished by college debt that they aren’t able to save?
This exchange and the broader point of Mr. Dimon’s testimony Wednesday highlight the extent to which climate-obsessed lawmakers and regulators pose a greater threat to the economy and financial system than changes in the climate. It’s a relief that some business leaders still are willing to say so.

Yeah. That too.

Fox Business News’ Larry Kudlow echoed the Journal and accused Tlaib of wanting a run on a major bank. The last time that happened, the U.S. came within hours of a financial collapse.

What she’s basically doing here is calling for a run on the bank. This is during a period when the Fed is rushing to tighten money and a potential financial crisis is out there, but because Jamie Dimon didn’t agree with the student loan bailout for the wealthy and defunding fossil fuels, she doesn’t care. Let’s bring down a big bank. No problem. Mind you, she’s on the Financial Services Committee. Fortunately, our banks are very well capitalized right now and will weather any monetary storm.
Then, there’s the issue of bank lenders providing credit to our fossil fuel industry. There’s been so much pressure from the woke climate crowd to stop loans. Well, wait a minute. In California, we’re not going to have any gas-powered cars in 10 years, but if you happen to own an EV right now, you’re not allowed to recharge the battery. Why is that? Because there’s not enough electricity. Why is that? Because they’re closing down fossil fuels, especially natural gas, but hang on. Rashida Tlaib wants the banks to do her far-left bidding by preventing loans to natural gas producers. Make sense?

Of course not. But that’s not even the scary part. That such a financial dunce sits on the congressional committee that regulates our banks probably keeps Fed chair Jerome Powell up at night.

And the scariest part of all is that the Democratic Party is full of financial, historical, and cultural dunces from end to end, from sea to shining sea. I give you the collected (collective?) wisdom of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:

There are quite a few countries that are really struggling because young people, under the burdens of capitalism and living under a society that’s increasingly concentrating wealth among the rich. We’re not having kids, or we’re not having kids at the same rate and we actually need immigrant populations to help balance things out.

Now we know at least part of the reason Taliban Tlaib wants the prisons opened. That illegal campaign funding isn't going to supply itself.
