Wow, people! It is amazing to me how many of the posts do not in any way answer my question! I'm not interested in a debate about whether or not dogs should be vaccinated every year. I'm also not interested in vets in Charlotte Hall or elsewhere in St. Mary's. Did I not say in my post that I live just south of Prince Frederick? That's in Calvert County, folks. Now if anybody actually has good advice for me that addresses what I would like to know, please do so. Otherwise take your debate to another thread, please.

Um, no, I have actually received very few answers to the actual question. I am not interested in whether some dog's toenails fell off or some debate about whether or not to vaccinate. I also think that when someone says they live in Calvert County it's a stretch to think that they want to drive 45 minutes to a vet in Charlotte Hall. So, if anyone out there has recommendations for a good, reasonably priced vet IN CALVERT COUNTY, please let me know.
There are only a few vets in the Calvert Co. area and if you are just south of Prince Frederick you only have two choices.
The Prince Frederick Animal Hospital or Solomons Animal Hospital. :shrug: Or drive over one of the two bridges to several other vet hospitals there. But just as Clevalley stated your OP also stated you are feed up with the costs. :shrug: so take some of the suggestions that have been offered also :yeah:

Third choice is Dunkirk Vet. If you don't like those 3, you're out of luck in Calvert Co. Good luck in your search.

I'm in Calvert and travel over the bridge for everything, including my vet.VCA St. Mary's has specials on shot's (if needed-I do the titer) on certain times of the day. They also have specials for Spays/Nueters and Seniors/Dental. I've used Solomons, Prince Frederick before and refuse to go to them. St. Mary's will give me scripts so I can get the best prices for meds. needed also. Or they will match my best price, especially on Heartworm meds. I trust Dr. Forest and he is very honest with me. I've been going there about 19 years. There is also the place opening in Huntingtown for low cost spay/nueters. Not sure if they are doing other things yet. But Frequent Flyer would know.
I have lived in Calvert all of my life and have used most of the vets in the county.
I used Dr. Brown at Calvert for a long time until I had a bad experience with him. My GSP at the time got nipped by a buddy of his that had his fill of Scout for the day. Scout wouldn't leave the injury alone and what had started out as only a slight graze turned into a decent size wound rather quickly. Called the office and got treated very poorly. "We are just about to close for the day. We can schedule you for some time next week." Their suggestion to get Scout to leave the wound alone, "Just put a band aid or something over it." Called Dunkirk, a vet that I had never used before, and they said to bring him on in even though they too were about to close for the night. Scout got a couple staples.
Took my business to Dunkirk after that. Loved them! I moved to Lusby so the drive became a bit much for me to do, especially with 4 animals who all come due around the same time. Not long after the move, I noticed tape worms in one of my dogs stool. Called Solomons and was on hold for about 10 minutes before I hung up, called Dunkirk and took them up.
That should have been a sign of things to come at Solomons but I shrugged it off as just a busy day. After all, they are only a few miles down the road so it was just more convenient. Not long after I started going there, I started to feel ripped off. Every time I went in they tried to upsell me. I knew what my pets needed and they kept saying "Oh, but the blood work is past due"-done six months ago, or "They really do need a bordetella shot" even though in my opinion it doesn't work since dogs still get it even with the shot. A real kicker was when they charged me to put my cat to sleep. I thought at the time it was rather odd since when I went with my brother to put his down there was no charge, but again, I figured that it must have just been a change in policy. Then I went in for a quote to get my cat's declawed. Over $600 per cat for front feet only. At that point, I decided to send my business elsewhere.
I now use St. Mary's and love them.

I live in Calvert, south of PF. I worked at PF animal hospital for many years ....my dogs saw Dr Chabot....she then moved to Three Knotch in hollywood( yes it is St marys) and she married so she is now Dr Matteson...I would drive to another state if need be for my dogs to see her....do not know many of the newer vets in the county....I feel if you find a good fit for your pets needs then it is worth alittle extra drive time to know they are getting the best care. Dr Tacia at Tidewater rocks too !!! Not sure if that would even help in your limited to Calvert search but it is my 2 cents worth...Good Luck !!

Didn't include any meds, I order them online.

The PAWS Calvert Spay/Neuter/Wellness Pet Clinic is not yet open. Still a lot of red tape to go through. I just love Calvert County!
We live in Lusby and have a business in Solomons but take our animals to All Kinds Vet Hospital in Calloway, St Mary's county. I love the husband and wife team there and have never felt *guilt tripped* into any unnecessary procedures nor do I find their mark up on medications outrageous. At the last visit, they offered me a written prescription for the dogs' heartworm pills and I asked what it would cost to buy from them and was pleasantly surprized at the cost. Not only did I get what I thought was a good price- they must have submitted a rebate and I got a check for $14 from the company!
I have been told by several people that one local vet is charging people $5 to write a prescription to be filled elsewhere. That is pure Bull$hit!
To the OP- there will always be good and bad said about every pet related service including groomers, retailers and veterinarians. You will have to make your own decision based on calling and getting price quotes, office staff attitude and availablity schedule (ease of getting an appointment that suits your needs), referrals from others to meeting a vet and seeing how they handle your fur-child. I hear it all- good and bad- and have chosen a business that suits my needs...

You can have a titer check done on CPV (vaccine titer) & CDV (vaccine titer).... and even if your dog has an auto immune issue you CAN have a Rabies Antibody Titer done but you do have to provide rabies vaccination history and reason for testing. (you should not vaccinate a dog that has an auto immune problem)
I do get my dogs the Lyme vaccine. And I would also get ONLY Lepto since it is only good for a year. Canine Leptospirosis
No lepto for small breeds!

Hmmm, one word for you! Should not matter if you HAVE to cross a bridge to find the best care. Dr.Brown's in Calvert has great prices and good care...but that word is biatch! You should appreciate all the recommendations and advice you received.

Couldn't agree with you more. I stopped posting in this thread after the OP's attitude needed some serious adjusting and the stick needed to be pulled outta her azz. Clearly, we weren't helpful enough for her liking.
Anyway, am I correct in my understanding that Dr. Brown works at Calvert Animal Hospital in Owings? I may need to check them out. I feel like my vet's prices are pretty high compared to the price poster paid in Owings. Then again, my dog is twice the size!
