Reasonably priced good vet?

I think I may reluctantly have to look for a new vet for my dogs. I've used my current vet for years and love the doctors, but their prices have risen astronomically. I can't get out of there for under $200 even for a routine checkup and shots. Does anyone have any recommendations? I live just south of Prince Frederick.

In this post you said NOTHING about not wanting to cross the bridge into St. Mary's or going to Charles County. So getting the panties in a total wad about going across the bridge was a bit much. I lived in Calvert and crossed the bridge for my dog.

I take my dog to All Kinds. They are wonderful and so are the techs. If getting shots is such a concern take the dogs to Petco for shots. There is usually a big line when the mobile vet is there. I don't know how much it costs.

No lepto for small breeds!
True! I have seen lots of small breed dogs have reactions to Lepto :yay::high5:

But it looks like that post was going out as a reply to Calvertnewbie.... they have a 3yr old lab and it sound like its an outside dog.

Yeah, I think it was to me. Our dog is inside most of the time but is outside whenever we are. He loves to be outside playing in the sun or swimming.

:buddies: I figured that's what you meant but before anyone started bashing me for being a horrible pet owner, I wanted to make sure it was clear. You know how it goes here on the forums.

Wow, people! It is amazing to me how many of the posts do not in any way answer my question! I'm not interested in a debate about whether or not dogs should be vaccinated every year. I'm also not interested in vets in Charlotte Hall or elsewhere in St. Mary's. Did I not say in my post that I live just south of Prince Frederick? That's in Calvert County, folks. Now if anybody actually has good advice for me that addresses what I would like to know, please do so. Otherwise take your debate to another thread, please.

You don't deserve a dog with your attitude! Relax lady.......

Couldn't agree with you more. I stopped posting in this thread after the OP's attitude needed some serious adjusting and the stick needed to be pulled outta her azz. Clearly, we weren't helpful enough for her liking. :cds:

Anyway, am I correct in my understanding that Dr. Brown works at Calvert Animal Hospital in Owings? I may need to check them out. I feel like my vet's prices are pretty high compared to the price poster paid in Owings. Then again, my dog is twice the size!

Yep, that's where he is and there is another mobile vet in Owings who has great prices too, let me know if you need her number.:howdy:

Re Calvert County: I use Dr. Schmeiser and Dr. Parveieni at Dunkirk Vet and Dr. Bowen at Chesapeake Animal Clinic in North Beach.

I get the rabies and other vaccinations at Calvert Animal Welfare League when they sponsor a vaccination clinic, or at Petco when they offer their discounted vaccinations also. The shots are cheaper and you don't have to pay for an office visit. If one of my pets is ill, he/she goes to the vets I named.

Other ways I keep my vet bills down is by purchasing good quality food, asking the vet if the med being recommended comes in a generic form or can be purchased over the counter. My cat was being given an antacid and it turned out that I could just buy the human tablet OTC and cut it in quarters. Talk to whichever vet you choose.

A vet from years ago tried to sell me a bottle of ear cleaning solution for $21. I asked him if there was something else/cheaper I could use, like a home product or something cheaper from a store and he said sure and gave the the names of two addl products at 1/3 the cost. Again, talk to your vet.

But...when my pets need vet care I spend the money. One kitty goes to the vet on Monday for an operation. Hang in there....if you continue to chat with folks on here, you'll learn some $$ savers.

This thread popped into my head yesterday when I took my dog to the vet. I had decided that the only shots she'd get were the Bortetella and Lepto (she didn't need the rabies). Turns out I had been refusing the others for awhile. I did let them take some blood though so they'd have a baseline if anything should happen to her when she gets sick.

I nearly fell over when they weighed her. 119 lbs!! I told them that half of that was probably fur. She's a Malamute and has her full winter coat now.
