Are you insinuating that Miami would give out a degree without the athlete getting an education? Next thing you'll be telling me that wrasslin is fake! :jameo:

...I am quite sure Mr. Portis met 'da U's' criteria in full for receiving whatever bestowment of achievement he was entitled to.

And wrestling is not fake. The outcomes may, mind you may be somewhat...predetermined, but past that, there are no tougher athletes on the planet.

What do you suppose Portis would be doing for a living if our 'enlightened' society wasn't paying him millions of dollars a year to run around with a football, trying to avoid other millionaires who are trying to hit him as hard as they possibly can? For our entertainment?

Maybe he'd be teaching Human Ethics at the U? Perhaps he'd be a doctor of veterinary medicine? Maybe he would be studying the relative merits of hypocrisy and moral relevence in 'advanced' populations? Sure he would. Maybe.

Look at us, people. Is pro football all that different from dog fighting? No, there's not death or as much bloodshed in football, but then there wouldn't be as much in dog fighting if they wore pads in helmets, would there? What about Portis? He knows the day he can't run fast enough or turn quick enough he's disposed off, pretty much like a dog that's lost his fight, useless. Right?

Judge the man for his words and his actions, sure, but should we be so, well, sanctimonious and self righteous about a human being who lives in a culture that has rewarded him from day one for what he can do as an athelete, just like a dog, and could give a crap about him, at all, as long as he can run that ball?

Tell me how it's totally different.

Hmmm, football is their choice and one that they are well paid for.

...as are fighters. And the money comes from whom? The same people who think a teacher is worth $40,000 a year; us.

Now perhaps I read your post wrong but,,, I thought you were comparing football to dog fighting. Did something fly over my head here because there is no comparison.

...are washing their hands of Portis 'oh, the bad man likes dog fighting' and my point is what do you honestly expect of a guy who has made his career out of a sport that the people washing their hands pour untold dollars into to basically watch people hurt each other.

Portis can't speak clearly. He has a reputation as not the brightest bulb even though he's been to college. The folks looking down on him view him, basically, like Portis views dog fighting; shut up and run the ball.

Ok, I see your point. Portis is pretty ignorant and perhaps he doesn't know any better.

Hey Larry, remember when we were young enough to think that the original "Rollerball" movie was science fiction?

There is no defence to dog fighting....there is no excuse for the slimebag humans that abuse animals for "entertainment".

There's a saying that says something like "The true judge of character is how you treat those that are less fortunate than you."

Michael Vick is nothing but a rich thug, as is Portis, it seems. You can paint a piece of crap gold...but it's still crap. :ohwell:

Clinton Portis made his thoughts on dog fighting clear while defending fellow football player Michael Vick in a television interview; he's all for it! Following are a few of his intelligent comments:

"I think people should mind their business, you know. I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it's his property, his dog, if that's what he wants to do, do it." Also, "I'm from Laurel, Mississippi, so I know a lot of backroads that got a dog fight if you want to go see it."

Wow, what an uneducated loser; he can't even speak English articulately! Does this animal torture advocate deserve to represent the National Football League? The Washington Redskins? Clinton Portis is an ignorant, small-town thug who unfortunately has the power to influence youngsters with his words...that is really scary.

Please feel free to write or call the Washington Redskins AND the Clinton Portis Foundation and let them know how you feel! Dog fighting is cruel, heinous and A FELONY. This is unacceptable behavior!

If I may...

People have choices. The dogs don't. Portis cannot be defended in this matter. Hate to give you red...but this story bothers me a great deal. Dogs are the most loyal of species...and when they get taken advantage of, it pisses me off.

...clarify to my anonymous red friend; people watching dogs fight for entertainment is barbaric and as much as for your point as for the violence itself.

My intent was not to forgive dog fighting at all but to focus some attention on our values in a broader; Football is barbaric. It is different in that is it, as many have pointed out, a choice and well paid at that, but there are similarities and a person like Portis has been taught his whole life that his worth is rather much based on the same things the dogs worth is.

In any event, I think we're both happy that dog fighting is an illegal felony.

But wait, there's more...
While Larry makes some valid points on this matter, I'm more interested in what Catt has to say about it. :snacks:

Who the hell would have given you red for one of the most intelligent and on-the-mark characterizations of society I've seen in a very loooong time? Has JPC found his way to this thread now?

...be too far of a stretch to say that, at least once in awhile, my ramblings might, on occasion, be of the, shall we say, semi-communicative, or communicationly challenged, communication type which is to say that, every now and again, there could be, perhaps, some, well, confusion or otherwise uncertainty about what, exactly, it is that I am trying to communicate. To the reader.

I guess I understand what Larry is saying..but I generally stay out of his arena.

My issue is that the football players (HUMANS) choose to participate in a "barbaric" sport...dogs don't have the luxury of choice. Of course, the dogs can choose not to fight and are either maimed or killed.
