Registering Vehicles

Stop Staring!!!!!
Waldorf is big. But if you go in clean shaven you will come out with a 5 o'clock shadow. Take a pillow and buy your kids 2-3 Birthday and X-mas gifts in advance. It's that bad.

Editing here: Oops. Just catching on that you are a lady. Forget the 5 o'clock shadow thing.

Any hints tips tricks to the DMV here, besides bringing a book :nerd:? Just moved into town and have two vehicles to register. They are both in my husbands name...any one have first hand experience with registering a vehicle that is in someone elses name?

Thanks for helping through this one...
I think you'd better let him do it. Or have power of atty.

Okay, ya beat it out of me, it's in Loveville.. and the staff there is awesome, friendly and helpful.. They actually go out of their way to help you instead of trying to find 10 reasons not to.

They're fantastic. Last time I went there, Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver" was starting up as I walked up to the front door. As I *LEFT* the building after renewing my tags, the song was JUST ENDING. Awesome. That means I couldn't have been more than four minutes.

Isn't the amount of tax dependent upon the age of the vehicle? I don't think I had to pay any on my 7-y/o van when I moved here 3 years ago.

Then again, I'm old, so I may have forgotten...
Yea, the tax is a % of the bluebook value of your vehicle.

A very helpful but little known secret is that you can call the main MVA phone number and ask about the various wait times at the different MVA locations. I called once when Glen Burnie had a 3 hour wait and Annapolis didnt have a single person waiting.

You can also go to Fast Tags or whatever it's called and generally have no wait. Cost is a few bucks more is all.

:yeahthat: We have three cars that we have to get registered and even though we paid over 8% tax on them already in Texas we now will owe a ton of money here for taxes as well. I believe husband said we are going to owe almost 1500.00 for all 3. So be prepared to clean out your savings! :jameo:
I thought you only paid tax on the vehicles IF the state you were coming from hadn't taxed them already. Doesn't sound legal to pay sales tax on an item twice..

Though I think I kept my PA registration until i bought new cars down here.

:yeahthat: I paid 5% sales tax on my vehicles and had the original bill of sale from Maine proving it. I had a little trouble with a camper trailer but got it straightened out and I did not have to pay any tax on the value of the vehicle.

Also, if your car is newer than 7 years and you paid less than blue book value for it, you'll want to bring a Notorized bill of sale. Otherwise, they will charge you full value.

Some MVAs are OK but he idiots in Glen Burnie, Annapolis and Waldorf are trained to find something wrong, give you a hard time and do what they can to move very slowly. They get paid every other week whether they work hard or not and they know it.

You guys have been great, thanks. So I should bring bill of sale for vehicle. One was bought from some punk in NC. Hmmm, but I think we paid tax on these things at some point; thought they were annual tax in each state. Sorting through random papers as we speak. I'll report back with the experience tomorrow. Thanks again.

Did you go to the MVA website first? It actually explains things very well, and could save you a trip if you don't have everything ready.

The last few times I went to Loveville it took me less than ten minutes.

Yeah we came in the state with a paid off 2000 Jeep and a paid off 2004 VW. They valued the older Jeep at $9,000. Who the hell is going to buy a 5 year old jeep with 125,000 miles on it for $9,000. It's in bad shape because he used to drive it around job sites and proving grounds. It's also moved him across the country twice.
We argued with her and she dropped it to $5,000. Just be careful.

When I registered my Celica from VA to MD, I wasn't asked to pay the tax again. They didn't ask for a bill of sale or receipt or anything either. Maybe it's because I was active duty at Pax River! :yay:

They (Waldorf MVA) DID send me to get an emmissions inspection, though. I didn't know you don't need one if you live in St. Mary's. Emmissions people sent me right back to the MVA AFTER waiting in line there. Guess they had their fun. :ohwell:

I've got one better than all of y'alls-I recvd. a notice from the DMV recently, stating I can not own an antique motor vehicle unless I own another car/form of transportation.

If I remember correctly, active duty personnel do not have to pay the tax if they register their car with in 60 days of reporting to their duty station in the state of Maryland.

From MD MVA

If you are not establishing residency because you are only temporarily stationed in Maryland and you are a member of the armed forces of the United States or of the United States Public Health Service and you are on active duty in this State or an adjoining state or the District of Columbia, you do not need to register your passenger vehicle in this State if your vehicle is currently registered in your state of residence.

If you are establishing residency in Maryland you must title and register your vehicle within 60 days of moving to Maryland. If you delay beyond 60 days, you will not be eligible for a tax credit for any titling tax paid in another state, and you may be subject to a citation for an out-of-state registration. For more information...

Well the visit went okay. Didn't get to go in the AM, but showed up at 4pm. Husband had a hospital birth certificate which they don't take. Seems like this happens to them a lot. They mention it in fine print on the website, but it's not where they say to bring your birth certificate; it's halfway down the page that they indicate what type of birth certificate they take. So, he'll have to go back. They would have taken his passport, but we didn't bring that and they don't indicate that you can use that in the list. So, overall, not as seamless as we had hoped, but not too painful. Except for the payment of $400 for 2 cars, although that is for 2 years. We did get partial credit for having paid taxes in VA recently.

Where did you go to get an inspection? I had one place say $60 and another was $89.

All of a sudden yesterday my airbag light came on. After I had it diagnosed it is some sensor in the passenger side seatbelt tensioner. Seat belts test find but the dumb computer chip is throwing an error. I'm hoping that won't cause the inspection to fail, but one place says it could depending on who does it. So they didn't tell me what they would do but they were the $89 place.

Also it says for a new resident you have 60 days to get a tax break, but it doesn't say what that break is. Anyone know what that is?
