Relocate to Maryland

I'm just picking at him. He asked Woogie if he went South when Woogie was saying what he hadn't liked about Maryland. Toppick's my Buddy!

I must say that is one thing that scares me a little... I am not saying you were making fun of the South at all!! I have an accent, no one else in my family really does and I live in DALLAS but I have a very strong accent. I don't do well with stereo-types. Most people (while traveling around) are really nice, guys always want to just to talk more, Odd I know! Some look at you like your stupid, when in fact my I.Q. level is probably much higher than thier own. Yea, that is not good!

I'm a MD native. I'm unhappy over what MD has turned into.
I remember what it was. I hope I wasn't too rude with the
post, just trying to give a little history from the first-person
point of view. Lived in several parts of MD over my life. The
biggest problem is that MD is run by the special interests and
"progressive thinkers" in the MD Legislature in Annapolis who
have a "Big Brother" attitude towards their constituents. I've
met quite a few of these politicians over the years who have
actually said that we don't know what's good for us and they
do!

Parents no longer have any rights concerning what their children
learn or see or hear in schools. Parents no longer have any rights
when it comes to the raising/rearing of their children. Everything
is mandated by the State and if you DARE to deviate from it you
WILL answer to the State! (DSS, CPS, Education, etc.)

Citizens no longer have ANY say in what the State government
does with THEIR tax monies! Citizens no longer have ANY say
in what the State does with their property or their property rights.
Citizens no longer can expect the State to adequately furnish
public safety or public works support as this money must FIRST
go to the "disadvantaged" (read ... non-working slobs who are
more interested in getting into illegal activities and replicating
than doing an honest day's work!).
Citizens are no longer allowed by the State to speak what's on
their minds (1st Ammendment anyone?) because that would hurt
"other cultures" and "infringe on others' rights" (hence it is now
a suspencion-offense to say "Christmas" in school, but we can
talk ALL ABOUT Rahmadan, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year,
etc.)

Citizens are no longer allowed to protect their homes, families or
persons due to laws enacted by the State (2nd Ammendment anyone?)
Yet the criminals can freely intrude into your lives, homes, etc. and
injure, steal and destroy with complete impunity! (THEY have "rights"!)

Citizens in Md no longer enjoy privacy in their homes or on their property
as the State has enacted laws that govern what they can do on
thier property and with their property and what they can keep on
their property. (4th Ammendment anyone?)

I was brought up to respect EVERYBODY. I still open doors, say
"Good morning ma'm" to ANY woman. To say "yes sir" and "no ma'm"
to ANY other adult, and to address ANY adult by "Mr." or Mrs./Ms"
regardless of nationality, color or whatever. I was taught to respect
ANYone else's traditions and customs and their right to have them.
But I was ALSO taught that I should respect MY family and MY customs
as well. I don't look down on others, I just don't want others shoved
down my throat!

I don't hate MD, I just hate what it has become! I know I can't
change it, so I left. For my family's safety and my family's happiness.
I do, however, think it is OK to tell others how things are and let
them make their own decision as to whether to relocate or not. But
they are entitled to know the WHOLE story.

well chances are, SOMEBODY is going to stereotype you for your accent/dialect no matter where you move (if it is out of your birth/growth location). I can honestly say that not many people tend to be stereotyped for accents around here unless it is a northern (new york, maine, other new england areas, ect) then you will have some people looking down upon you for that  (but you don't really have to worry about that now do you? lol)

Grandma and I

Came back to San Antonio about 2 1/2 years ago with no regrets. We miss a few things from MD such as Crabbing, Gardening ( the soil here in north San Aantonio is very rocky for the first 2 inches, and then turns to solid limestone.) I miss my roses, but am working on raised beds.
Also the proxemity to DC and the museums etc.
How does my old house look Sharon?

I moved here from Dallas about 7 years ago. One thing you will be quite surprised to learn is that housing here is much more expensive that Dallas. The house we were living in in Plano was selling for $185. The same kind of house here was around $300,000.

I have a Southern accent and there are a lot of Military that have been transferred here from VA and other places so accents are abounding. Stereo-types are everywhere. I still deal with the "blonde" thing. This place won't be any different in the stereo-type than anywheere else you've been most likely.

that is one thing I am ready for.... I have been with appraisers commercial and residential for over 5yrs so we see a lot of the market. Texas is still pretty cheap real estate

"Sweet Tea" as served where I now live is ALWAYS over
ice, strong (but not too strong), has 1/4 of a lemon bobbing
around in it and enough sugar in it to peg your glucose meter!

Good stuff! You will get one of the "are you crazy" looks if
you want HOT tea! they'll just bring you some hot water and
a tea bag! You're on your own from there! People are nice,
but they love their customs! (BTW...You will INSTANTLY stand
out in a restaurant if you ask "what are grits?") :killingme

oh yes, will miss tex-mex, oh wow!!!

Ha! You might miss the "Tex", but there is an s-load of "Mex" around here... :lmao:

I am contemplating pulling the ejection handle on MD after being here my entire life. I am tired of the taxes and the direction MD is moving... this area has changed and I miss the rural-ness (for the lack of a better term).

This is not a bad place, I am just a tad-bit jaded right now with the area and a few other things. I think it might be time for a life change - but maybe not, only time will tell.

I am looking at Southern Indiana, but the stars have to align for this to be reality anytime soon. I have to sell a house first and we (family) need to come to a consensus.

Sweet Tea is it's own food group down here. When you say tea the only question is with or without lemon. The food will be a change that might take longer than anything, you know down South if you can fry it, we can eat it!!!
I don't eaver realize something isn't "normal" until I metion it to my friend in PA and he is like what in the world is that...? He got scared at first when everything here was fried or spicy!!

Maryland sees itself as the "California of the East Coast".

Complete with all of the ideas and ideals. And you see how
well it's (NOT) working out there!

I think that is why everything is right for me now. All my brothers are in different places in Texas or about (one probably about to move back to Australia), there is no one here to really hold me down. It just seems like the perfect time!

I am thinking of relocting to Maryland from Dallas,Texas (big change I know) and am looking for a little help. It is for personal reasons and do plan on taking my time. I have been to a few towns in the state an just feel in love. It also helps that I have a very close friend is southern PA. I am a 32yr old female and just looking for any first-hand information on a couple smaller cities or towns.

I have found that one way of checking out an area is checking out the local schools. You can do this online at greatschools.net It gives all the information on teachers, students, test scores and how the school rates within the state. Best of Luck to you whatever you decide to do.

A little life-lesson about Maryland (Peoples Republik of) from an ex-Marylander.

*Born/raised in Hyattsville, MD. (DC/Metro area). Moved to St.Mary's County
(SoMD) when I got married because of crime and high taxes. (State, County
and City taxes). Things were better for a while, then crime, development and
taxes came to St.Mary's. Was a victim (several times) of property crimes in
St. Mary's. Police respose was lacking. The "demographics" were changing,
and family values and respect for others was disappearing. This was the 1970's

*Moved to Calvert County, Md in the 1980s and into a gated community for a
(hopefully) better situation. More taxes, plus the gated community fees (which
escalated yearly), again police and other services were lacking and the gated
community let itself go down hill. I even got on the community board and tried
to make things better, but special interests and politics (state and county)
prevailed.

*Meanwhile state taxes (income, property and sales taxes as well as other
"taxes" called "user fees" and the like continued to escalate and the welfare
state population in MD increased as well. Crime went through the roof, the
schools went into the toilet, public safety is a joke and the average citizen
has no rights whatsoever. (You got to get a friggin' PERMIT to add an elec-
trical outlet in your OWN HOME! Just ONE outlet!) You have to pay the
State for EVERYTHING! Taxes on your income, "user fees" for public facilities
that are ALREADY paid for with your TAXES (such as boat ramps, parks, etc.)

*When you drive on MD roads you pay one of the HIGHEST prices in the
Nation for gasoline because of State Fuel Taxes! The State Police (aka...
"revenue collection agents") spend more time writing tickets for small stuff
and less time actually working on REAL traffic safety (and FORGET any anti-
crime work or timely response to emergencies!)

*When you go to a shopping center or most any other public place, you take
your life in your hands because in The People's Republik of Maryland the
criminal has MORE RIGHTS than YOU do!

*Oh! By the way! As a Texan, you should appreciate THIS! In MD you CANNOT
defend yourself or carry a weapon for protection! IT'S THE LAW! Doesn't
matter if you have been a victim of a violent crime or anything else! The
average law-abiding citizen CANNOT defend themself in MD without 'infringing
upon the rights' of the criminal! Women are routinely victimized in MD with
no support from the justice system or laws. The schools are rampant with
gang activities, even in the "good" counties such as Montgomery and Howard
where the incomes are higher and people carry more political sway. It's on
the news daily! Yet the Governor and the State Legislature ROUTINELY do
NOTHING to stop this! This is why so many people don't want their children
in MD schools!

*MD's school system has been on the scholastic decline for at least 20 years
with no end in sight. Thanks to "enlightened" teachers who are more concerned
with salary negotiations than with performing to their job descriptions plus
the interference of the Democratic State Government which dictates that
the schools should teach about such things as "alternative life-styles",
"proper contraception methods" , and "cultural diversity and appreciation"
while basic skills such as Reading, Writing, and Mathematics are left behind.
Don't believe me? Go to ANY business in MD and see how many "high-school
graduates" can make change or read product information. Listen to MD
newscasters (TV "journalists") and how they report on "Kids" "busting up
stuff" and how people "disrespect" each other and how one should work
on thier "cred", etc. This is on network TV! (For the record" PEOPLE have
CHILDREN and GOATS have KIDS.) You can even drive the MD State roads
and see NUMEROUS ROAD SIGNS mis-spelled! THIS should indicate how the
schools are in the "Free State". BTW...Don't even THINK of saying things
in MD such as "Merry Christmas" as THAT is "infringing upon the rights of
others"! It's even an OFFENSE to do this in schools! (And it is enforced MUCH
more actively than things such as weapons and fighting!)

*TAXES! MD has the second HIGHEST tax rate in the Country! And it has the
second LOWEST service rate in the Country! Check the stats! The governor
has jsut increased the sales tax rate and has raised property assessments
over 400% in most cases! The counties in MD follow right behind the State
as they are allowed up to 50% of the rate of State taxation. And if you live
in an incorporated city you will get hit for ANOTHER 50% rate! yet at this
moment the State is $1 BILLION + in the hole! MORE tax hikes are planned!
Several Counties (such as Baltimore County and Prince Georges County are
bankrupt and have instituted hiring freezes and service cutbacks...even in
public safety services!)

Over 75% of the tax revenues collected in MD go out to "entitlement programs"
for the people who don't choose to work and whose main form recreation is
replication. (After all, you get "more money" every time you have another
child!)

*After living through the 1990's and into the "new millenium" in the "Free
State", I and my wife finally reached retirement and our families had all died
off. We also became a statistic again by becoming victims of VIOLENT crime!
We went to court (with SEVERAL other victims of the same criminals ... poor
"misguided" "kids") where these "children" proceeded to OPENLY LAUGH at us
in court with NO repercussions and were LET OFF with ADMONISHMENTS!
These same "misguided" "kids" later attempted to KILL a State Police officer
during the commission of a FELONY crime! They STILL were returned to the
streets because the courts felt it was "cruel and inhuman" and "detrimental"
to confine them to jail!

*In 2003 my wife and I finally completed our escape plans, sold our home,
packed our belongings and LEFT the "Free State" and haven't looked back!
Our grown children are still behind TRYING to raise their families in MD and
make a decent living that they can have a PART of to buy homes and food.
At least one of our children is making plans to escape in the near future to
our location because they, too, want their children to grow up and survive
in a better place.

*We now live in another state where we enjoy a MUCH better standard of
living, people are friendly and honest, crime is VERY much lower due to a
better level of police protection and also FAMILY VALUES in our area! We
have MANY community events, the school system is in the upper 25% in the
Nation, taxes are MUCH lower compared to what we paid in MD, and a
greater portion is returned to the local areas! I also enjoy property rights,
the freedom to protect and defend my home and family, and development
is limited sensibly by the local government which is run by local people who
actually have a stake and a say in how things are done!

And before people here start wondering...I retired with over 40 years in
public safety! So I have a SLIGHT idea of what I'm talking about!

Now, GET OFF MY LAWN, ya little whippersnapper!:killingme
Actually, woogie is mostly correct. 2nd Amendment rights are curtailed. You CAN defend yourself in your own home, but a carry license is out of the question unless you can "prove" a threat exists against your person, you carry large sums of cash, or are politically connected. The crime rate reflects this, as criminals (gosh, are you sitting down?) ignore the laws. Doubt this? Compare MD crime stats with those of adjacent states with "Shall Issue" laws. The difference is marked.

That is a great ideal, and does tell a lot about the area, in some ways... I don't have kids and not really looking for a great school district. There are places with nice teachers and well rounded kids, but me personally, I don't want to live there!
