Relocate to Maryland

I suppose it really is what you make of it... and that means anywhere. The funny thing is I started this to get some ideals on where (cities or towns) to move up there. I have been told pretty much two cities or not at all. It will be a fe months and then I am going to take a full twon weeks to look around the state and find that "perfect" place to call home.

well...you've got a few choices.

if you want still pretty far away from people and stuff, you could always get a place in the mountains of western maryland. If you want somewhat in the middle to where you are within an hour of either a "city" or the nice rural settings then anywhere in st. mary's county will be a good bet to look at and decide just how rural you want to go. (I live in Hollywood and it is nearly perfect for me).

If you want even more relaxed (from my experience) but also close to the beach...maybe a place on the eastern shore is what you're looking for. (eastern shore of the Bay). I am not sure how far away any of this would put you from PA though (or where at in PA that your friend or whatever lives)...

Your best bet may very well be western maryland if you want a more mountain-filled area and from what I can tell (don't go there often) more small towns...but I actually think what you're looking for could be more down my way in st. mary's because you mentioned wanting a little of everything...but be forewarned that this is one of those places people are saying is going to "chit", but it also depends on the exact place you decide to move in and associate at.

Come on down! Southern Maryland's slogan is "the land of pleasant living".
You live the way you want, and down here it's like living in a park. Most of the natives don't bite, but the occasional one will take a chunk out (mainly your patience). Unfortunately the boys in Annapolis (State Government) have loaded us up with taxes on taxes - again. Don't expect it to be cheap, or even inexpensive, living here. The only thing "FREE" in "The Free State" is the motto.
Waldorf is definitely a built up town with more people in a ten mile radius than almost anywhere else in SoMD. Take a look around, the Blue Crab stadium is pretty centrally located.
Welcome.
:howdy:

Thanks for the information! A realtor is helping us look for houses and found one in Benedict that he wanted us to look at. Is this a good area? What are the closest areas that you would recommend me looking? Sorry for all the ?'s but I'm a little nervous!! I'll be a long way from home!!:poorbaby:

I am looking to be at least some-what close to everything. Moving from Dallas I don't want to be thrown into no where!!! My friend, he is in south/Cemtral PA.

Thanks for all the information

well!

i'm going to go out on a limb and say you would probably like some of the St. Mary's area. You may like the calvert side of the river as well. Probably want to stay away from moving to Prince George's county unless you want to be more city-like and don't mind the crime that goes along with it (people exaggerate it IMO, but it is also not a place I would really choose to move if I had an option).

I'd say if you have decent money, maybe you should look at the Breton Bay area. It has a golf course right there if you like golfing? and you can get places on the water...but this is one of the more pricey neighborhoods for the most part...but its also pretty nice. If you want something a little more out of the way, but in st. mary's, i'd say hollywood, ridge, callaway are all pretty good choices. The great mills area gets a really bad rap...you are probably NOT going to want to move there if you have no desire to live in the previous mentioned "city" with crime.

There are some fairly nice places north of here if you want to be even closer to PA. I can't think of some of the city names but they are north of baltimore (which is more of a city) so if you look a bit more north of that, probably a couple hours worth there are some fairly nice, still southern towns (like right south of the mason dixon line, there are some nice towns up there.)

EDIT: thank you karma giver...I wasn't thinking and you're correct, it is BRETON not "brenton" like I had. I don't live there so its not like I have the place memorized

You might also want to look at Southern Anne Arundel County -- 20 miles to DC, 18 miles to Annapolis, 32 to BWI Airport - 1 hour 10 min to PA Line up Rt 83 (Lothian, Harwood, Davidsonville, Edgewater, Mayo, Deale, Chruchton, Galesville, Shady Side). Also - Northern Baltimore County - even closer to PA - Timonium, Lutherville, Parkton etc..

It is an exciting time for you - take your time, rent for awhile until you find the perfect spot.... Lots of places are available for rent with the housing market cooling off.

I swear I don't know why everybody keeps saying the folks here are so rude and crabby. When I moved here from VA two years ago I was overwhelmed by how nice and friendly almost everybody was and even now I still feel that way. Of course I usually smile at everyone and ask them How Are You? and say Thank You and Have a Nice Day so maybe that helps them be nicer. Or it irritates them enough that they'll say anything so I will just go away!

I have lived here for 2 1/2 years. We came from an area north of Los Angeles. Talk about rude! Of course, a majority of people living there chose to not learn the English language ... But a lot of the people I met that DID, were very private and stuck to themselves.
When we moved here, people were much friendlier and open and some children are even polite! I have complimented several mothers in stores because their children have said "excuse me" when walking in front of me. A lot of kids automatically say please and thank you without a parent saying "what do you say?"
I was raised with manners and respect and try not to forget that. Most of the folks here are friendly but maybe that's because I am friendly. I try to smile a lot and that makes a difference. I believe you will get out of the area what you put into it. If you come here wanting to like the place, chances are good that you will!
Anyways, I hope you all find a nice place to live. Most people will put the welcome mat out!

Hookem, I hope you have a good move, wherever you decide to settle. We're from New Braunfels, TX originally (you may be one of the only people on this forum who knows where that is!), but my husband was Navy so we moved around some. We've been in Virginia Beach, VA for almost 8 years, but now hubby has retired and is about to start a defense contract job at Pax River. We're looking forward to this move to a less crowded area. I firmly believe that home is where you make it, and that you should always try to get involved in your community and appreciate whatever it has to offer! We've been living with traffic and crime and all that comes with living in a crowded place. No place is perfect, but if you try to make your corner of the world a better place it has to be good in some ways, right?

I do know where that is, I have spent a little time there over the years!!! I understand what you mean about the traffic, but at the sametime I don't want tobe in the middle of absolute nothing. Just hoping to find something comfortable that I can become a part of... Best of Luck to you and your husband!!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but......true the traffic is not as bad in the immediate area as Va Beach, but if you have to go outside this county then prepare yourself. The Washington DC area was rated second to Calif for the country's worst traffic.

The crime is getting bad everywhere and we have it here too. Prince George county is horrible, do not go there alone. Charles county is having drive by shootings, drugs, gangs the whole 9 yards. St. Marys crime is going up also.

Also since you are coming from the south and I am not sure if you have ever lived in a Northern state (yes people I realize that Maryland is south of the Mason Dixon line but if you were born in the South then Maryland is considered a Northern state) the people here are alot different from the south. Be it a good thing or not I guess depends on how you take them.

Best of Luck to you..............

I live in Wildewood and with no traffic, I can be at work in 12 minutes, on base. With traffic, 20 - 25 minutes. Not a bad commute.

I am thinking of relocting to Maryland from Dallas,Texas (big change I know) and am looking for a little help. It is for personal reasons and do plan on taking my time. I have been to a few towns in the state an just feel in love. It also helps that I have a very close friend is southern PA. I am a 32yr old female and just looking for any first-hand information on a couple smaller cities or towns.

IMHO ~ there are better areas to go to...this place is freaky. If you are looking for culture..it's cool for a little while. You, As a 32 yr. old...it helps if you are 'educated' job wise. (I'm 50 yrs. old , but enjoy a party)

Social life is pretty lame, again just my opinion. I moved here from the west coast (although I am from VA) and I wouldn't recommend it for long term happiness. I'm in no way trying to slam SOMD......it's a very beautiful place, I've just never found my niche here.. I recommend giving it a try..you might dig it.:coffee:
