Relocating to Maryland

watercolor

yeah yeah
Well

There is Great Mills High School(GMHS) *I went graduated from there!*: which serves to Dameron, California, Chancellors Run and Lexington Park...along with the other areas around the base

Leonardtown High (LHS): serves to those in leonardtown, and the upper end of Great Mills, like Redgate, and omm, Tall Timbers area (right guys???) I could be wrong about the tall timbers area

Now if you were to go past leonardtown, towards the loveville area, they would more likely go to Chopticon.

Now with a private high school, there is Ryken, which is a catholic highschool, right before you hit old town leonardtown (almost went there, but tuition is high as heck)

For High Schools in the Calvert area meaning Chesepeake Ranch Estates that would be Patuxent High School. I dunno about the middle schools over there...dont know the names of em. Now Solomans, I have no clue on either, unless you want to put them in a private school, which I believe that middle school there is Our Lady Star of the Sea

Now the middle schools in St. Marys is Spring Ridge which is just a little ways past the back gate to Pax River, and then there is Lettie Dent (did I spell that right) for the ones up the way in upper loveville, and morganza area. Also, there is leonardtown middle, which is right down from the highschool ommm, I know there is one more I am missing also.

Also, for a private school in middle, I went to Lexington Park Christain School and then there is also Little Flower, that is in great mills area.

Ok...I know I am probably missing alot....please all add to this...:)

Could anyone tell me anything about the local middle and high schools in Calvert:D

Here's the rundown on CRE (Chesapeake Ranch Estates). There are a lot of nice houses back here in CRE. It depends on where you live, how much money you have to spend, and whether you are renting or not.

From your gathering of info, my guess is that you have children.

There are 2 bay beaches. Number one is near the clubhouse and has a pond on the other side of the road, which is frequented by ducks and geese looking for food, most are friendly, the swimming is good on the bay side.

Beach #2 has platformed picnic tables and built in grills. Swimming is okay there also. Most people like to fish there in the evening. There is also a boat ramp for small boats and jetskis. Both beaches have toilets and changing houses, as with the lake.

The lake is nice also and has it's own boat ramp for canoeing, kayaking, and I think they allow small trolling motors--no big boats with motors. Swimming is popular and it is the only place that has a lifeguard.

There are stables for horses (privately owned animals), fee for use. The same for the airpark, if you have a small plane. Anyone can come and go though, I'm sure.

We have Dowell, Appeal, and Patuxent Elementary schools depending on the age of the child and which part of CRE you live in. Southern Middle school and another one (the name escapes me, it's semi-new) depending on where you live. Patuxent High is the only high school for this end of the county. A few years old and already over crowded, but most are, this place is still growing.

CRE

Is waterskiing permitted in the area you mentioned with small boats and jetskis?

Which areas of CRE are the nicest ? We're in the market for a nice newer home (15 yrs or newer) with at least 3 bdrms, 2 baths, and quality features.

Question: Why do so many of the homes have 1-car garages or no garages?

We've noticed so many have no garages that are really nice homes, and wondered ?

Can owners park their boats in their yards?

What are the association fees, etc?

Can anyone give me info on Drum Point and Cove Point Woods areas?

We're fixated on the feeder areas to Patuxent HS, mostly because they not only have an outstanding academic program, but they were ranked the best fine arts program in the Tri-County area at the HS level. Anyone know anymore about this ranking?

Cabbage,

I doubt that you will be able to pull a skier with a trolling motor. Even if it were possible, the gestapo would make you stop. There is plenty of room in the bay for skiing, the lake is just too small.

There aren't any specifically nice areas. Everything is mix and match, depending on when the homes were built. Some areas have newer houses more than old because the lots were empty before the build up.

You can always build a garage on your lot after having your plans okayed by the review committee. As to why the builders do/don't include garages depends on the individual builder. Some houses are specifically built by contract, others go up on the market.

Yes, most people can and do park their boats in their driveways or yards. There are no boat slips here but they are available closeby.

Association fees ran about $340 this year, plus we are in a special tax district ($125/yr) on top of regular real estate taxes.

Hope this helps :)

I have friends who live in Cove Point Woods. It is a beautiful newer development with lovely houses on fairly large lots. I think they paid about $200k for the house back in 1998, which is probably about average for this development. Houses probably range from $180 to $220k but there are some that are more expensive.

Sorry about that chief.
We moved here recently and our realtor strongly advised us against CRE (Calvert Ranch Estates). I had found several places there on the net. There are several good places nearby, Cove Point and Drum Point come to mind.

We also have kids and wanted a "neighborhood" vice a place in the country, even though there were several beautiful places that were in "the country" that is, had no close neighbors.

We ended up buying in Lexington Park, because it is close to stores and there were several families in the neighborhood. You may want to check St. Mary's county, i.e. Great Mills, Lex Park, California or Hollywood if you want something that is convenient to shopping and is good for kids, just be careful. My advice is to let the realtor earn their commission and find a place for you.

In all seriousness...

There are several nice areas off of route 5 around Leonardtown and down to Lexington Park. On 235, above route 4 there some good places too.
I would consider the job market moderately tough, but there are definitely jobs around to be had.

CRE

We have also been advised to steer clear of CRE. Friends in the area explain that the "integrity of the neighborhood" has become compromised...

Any info out there on Osprey Cove?

Good luck.

I beg to differ Ridunno, Calvert county is not Gods Country. God's Country lies in the area south of St. Mary's City in St Mary's County. :)

God's country has a beach alright, but not the blistering heat of the tropics that gets old VERY quickly.
It has gulls and eagles and a wide variety of flora and fauna and gentle breezes that cool even the hottest of days.
It has waves that lap gently on the shore and majestic cliffs that rise from the water.
It has amazing sunrises that offer a kaleidoscope of colors and sunsets in pink and blue and orange that dazzle the eye.
It has blue water, white puffy clouds and greenery everywhere.

I have all of the above in Calvert County!

Funny, I have this where I reside also(in St. Mary's). I think you can say that the shores on the bay whether it be St. Mary's or Calvert are roughly the same.

Charles is by far the the best county in SMD.

Why? - It has it all.

If you like a busy area - You can't beat Waldorf.

If you like a quiet area - Hughesville, La Plata, White Plains, Bel Alton, ...

You are closer to DC, Baltimore, Annaoplis, and Richmond

Plenty of water, rivers and lakes

And Ken,

Is Scotland, MD - only the one road next to Point Lookout. I don't even recall seeing a post office.

They have one down in Scotland in a trailor type building. Another one is right down the road from that, right next to the Raley's country market. Good ole redneck Ridge.:barf:
