If you want organic food, there is a small store in Leonardtown town called Good Earth. It is located in the square. If you live in Glenn Forrest, it will be about 15 miles from you. There is also Woodburns in Solomon's that carries a variety of organic foods. Your best bet it to drive with a cooler to the closest Whole Foods or Trade Joe's. You can make a day out of shopping in Annapolis and finish off with hitting Trader Joe's and Whole Foods on your way home.

My husband just got orders to NAS Patuxent River. I have two sons, 5 and 3, and a dog. We wil be living in military housing. We are coming from Miami, FL (which Im soo sick of). I would greatly appreciate any and all information about this area. The schools, shopping (Im a major shopaholic), organic foods (Im a vegetarian). How far is everything from NAS Pax? Is there anything to do? Am I going to hate it or love it? Im form Virginia Beach, VA.
Everything you all can tell me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
For organic foods you can try Good Earth in Leonardtown; otherwise the farmers markets are great!

Hope you enjoy it here.

thank you all soo much for all the great, positive information! BTW, my husband is a E-5. (Are there any Intel Analysts out there??) We should be transferring sometime in August. I think weve decided to take Carpenter Park. He will be able to lay in bed longer before having to head to work. What school would my kids go to?
My husband and I are soo excited to be getting a change of scenery, and to raise our kids in the country away from all this hussle and bussle in Miami. Both of us cant wait to get back to our roots!
Im glad to see that I will still be able to maintain vegetarianism living in the country. Id die without my organic veggies! (ok, maybe not)
I wanted to know if there is anywhere like a spa/salon. Like body waxing, african american haircare, that sort of thing. Am I going to have to drive far for that too?? Anything you all can tell me would help me out TONS!

Oh yeah, My dad is also Navy. I kinda grew up in Norfolk, joined the Navy to get away from Norfolk, and ended up RIGHT BACK in Norfolk. If you are excited to be transferring there, Im hear to tell you it is not all what it is cracked up to be. ITS HORRIBLE!! I know people that have been stationed there thier whole career and would take the next thing smoking out of there! Good luck in Norfolk! :howdy:

That is also in Lexington Park district. I have never been inside any of those units, but the square footage is sure nice, they are larger. I hear the insides are nice. Now outside, don't plan on having anything for your own yard space, there is maybe a few feet or so, nothing is fenced (so if you have a dog, that would suck), everything is "common areas". You have a shed out in the back, taking up what little room you have to yourself, and the parking sure looks tight when I have been over in that community. Nothing looks like actual marked parking spots, nothing is off street. Like I said, I've never been inside, so I don't know for sure what that's like. Sometime in the future, we keep hearing different dates on when it may actually happen, housing is supposed to be torn down to have new stuff built, so know that you may be moving again when you are here. Although the latest I have heard on that is in '08. Supposedly temporary housing would be somewhere off base, but people would be in the same school districts, that wouldn't be affected.

I actually didn't mind Norfolk. I want to be east coast and the weather in Jax is too hot for my tastes. Right now I couldn't buy orders to Norfolk which shocked the hell outta me. I was lucky I had some strings to pull and friends in high places.

True. Friends of mine lived there recently, and they really love their home. A row of six townhomes were converted into three townhomes a couple years back by removing some walls between units. What is left now are three homes that are HUGE. Because the buildings are older, they have some nice detail work that you'd not find in today's construction. There are some nice trees in the neighborhood, too, and the area is a lot more private that some of the other housing communities on the base. I hope you enjoy your time here at Pax. I love it here!

You can always buy from the Amish selling their stuff at the market. Just don't drive off the side of the road when you see them for the first time going down the road in the horse & buggy.
