The thing that pisses me off is that the judge would not even LOOK at the paperwork D brought.
Why should the judge look at the paperwork? The law is clear, it says
Maryland Code said:
§ 13-701. Driving vehicle without evidence of registration.

(a) Prohibited.- Except as otherwise provided in this title, as to any vehicle required to be registered under this title, a person may not drive the vehicle on any highway in this State, unless the vehicle displays current registration plates and a current registration card is carried as required in this title.
When stopped and ticketed the vehicle was not displaying current registration plates, case closed.

Question. When exactly did the tags expire?

And I only ask this because the state is correct. It is against the law to carry expired tags. You're supposed to turn them in if they are expired. Even if they were renewed before he got pulled over, he still let them expire. I think that's probably the judge's point.

Then you ought to clue in the MVA, I renewed my tags online and it said printing out the online voucher was as good as the stickers.

Maybe you should clue the MVA in as the law clearly states that current registration plates are to be displayed.

This is good info to know. I always renew online but I try to do it before they expire.
I think the LEO should use his professional lattitude and accept the printed copy showing that you did renew.

I received my renewal notice long before my current tags were due to expire. Renewed online and paid for it, got the new sticker and registration in the mail last week, and my tags weren't even expiring until January.

:yeahthat: I hear so many horror stories with MVA and the insurance companies when it comes to tags, so I give them no reason at all to question mine.

Well apparently there is an obvious conflict with the law that the legislature needs to correct. In one location the law says that the current registration must be displayed and in another it says that the MVA can issue a temporary authorization certificate permitting a vehicle to be driven pending the issuance of current validation tabs. So which is it?

Sounds like that's the info D needed to show the judge.

Here it is if anyone needs it.
Maryland Code said:
§13–412.
(a) Except as provided in subsection (b) of this section, unless current validation tabs have been issued by the Administration and are displayed on the plates as provided in this subtitle, the registration and the registration plates issued under this title for them expire at midnight on the dates indicated on the registration card issued by the Administration.
(b) (1) The Administration may issue a temporary authorization certificate permitting a vehicle to be driven pending the issuance of current validation tabs.
(2) A temporary authorization certificate:
(i) Shall be issued for a period determined by the Administration not to exceed 15 days; and
(ii) Is not transferable and may not be used on another vehicle other than the one to which it was issued.
(3) A fee for a temporary authorization certificate may be established by the Administration.
(c) The Administration shall adopt rules and regulations to govern the issuance, display, and expiration of registrations, registration cards, registration plates, temporary authorization certificates, and validation tabs.

As long as you don't drive it, there's no problem. We hadn't been driving the truck.

MVA gives you a temporary registration that states "temporary registration, carry in the vehicle." or something like that. MVA says the temporary registration COUNTS. That proves he renewed the tags but is still waiting on the stickers. If the temporary registration does not count, then MVA needs to stop stating that it does.

Yes, but sometimes it's hard to fit an extra $200 in the budget, so we waited until we could afford it.
