As nice as the .50 Caliber is.. this is the shiznee.. They blow up, they have no idea where it came from, and more importantly they have no idea where you are..
What is it?

But my 50 Cal. is reusable and a 50 Cal. round to the head is more cost effective... :coffee:

Although I am liking it!!!

Ground Laser Target Designator

We used to Call them GLIDS.. and they were a little bigger then that. But you are hidden, and can direct any laser based weapons system with it. Hellfire, Paveway, CopperHead, amongst many other Artillery and Air delivered Smart Weapons.

The only concern you have is if they have IR NVG's it's possible they maybe able to see the laser... but you don't have to constantly shine the laser on the target, usually just the last 10 - 15 seonds of flight.

I forget the range, but it was WELL over 2 kilometers.

The 50 caliber also leaves a HUGE signature.. lot of smoke and dust. You fire one round and your azz better be at a run to get the hell out of there. I have seen some GREAT footage of our snipers at work in Iraq. There is no question of whether you hit your target or not.

A mile is a long way to run in the direction of a .50 cal though.

An M16 isn't very effective at a mile, but if you shoot enough rounds that direction one is going to find it's mark.

If they remember anything from military training, it should be that any weapon that leaves a big signature, you shoot and move or use enough firepower to kill everyone and make your signature a non-issue... :coffee:

I was trying to find the nomenclature but I can't remeber it. We used to carry a Thermal sight for the M2 50 Cal (it was originally developed for use a sniper rifle). Imagine that sniper rifle with a 'scope' on top with an objective lens bigger then a dinner plate.

What I used to ##### about, we had ALL of these cool thermal sights, for the M2 the TOW, the M16 and the M60.. but not one was ever sighted to it's parent weapon. Can you imagine getting a head shot with a .50 cal at 1.5 miles in the dead of night?

I think I have seen that same video. The one where the spotter is filming all the action and they are picking off people with 50 Cal HE rounds. The bodies just explode into pieces.......it was awesome!

They are now adaptable for M16, M60 and M2.. all the same sight. We used to have different sights for each weapon and they got bigger as the caliber went up.. the .50 cal sight was HUGE... and we had a hand held thermal viewer that looked a lot like the GLDS above, but the battery pack weighed about 20 pounds.
