...herein for folks to post favorite rides, past, planned rides, etc.

It makes me a little sad for all you folks in SOMD because I know what the riding is like down there and how freakin' spoiled rotten I am up here. I get in more lean and up and down getting out of my driveway than you poor bastards do down there on a whole ride. :buddies:

In any event, share your good ones!

We're leaving tomorrow AM for Richmond. Gonna go see a show. :larry:

It's 160 miles as the interstate flies. So far, the route I'm working on is just shy of 400 :diva:

Out 50 to Mt. Storm, down 42 (one section is worth the trip all by itself) to Petersburg, WV, Smoke Hole Rd, 33 to Harrisonburg, back over the mountain (another kick ass section) to Richmond.

I am bouncing off the freaking walls in anticipation...

Nice route, you should have some fun. Keep in mind that the overnight temperature is called to be in the low 20s, so there might be some slickness in the shadowy areas. Keep 'er up right. :buddies:

Accuweather says Petersburg, WV will be 40 plus by 10 am so, we ain't gonna get that far any earlier than that.

That ought to do for the shadows.

FR as in Fire Road? Been there, done that. On the Strat. :diva:

If I am one up, I've taken that beast on both gravel and dirt. Just gotta stand up some when crossing ruts and ditches. Hell, we've done some of it 2 up.

More often than not, we'll go down a road BECAUSE we don't know where it goes.

So far, the worst was when we had to turn around on a pretty good decline. On gravel. 2 foot deep rain ditches on both sides. THAT got my attention!

My new shoes for the Strat have been 'en route' for over a week so, we said screw it and rented a Road Glide for the weekend. Fairing, lowers, we should be good.

Got the neck gators, liners for my gauntlets. Layers under my lined riding jacket. Trying to decide between my kewl look black leather chaps (assless) and my lined riding pants which keep me warm all day below freezing.

Plus, we'll stop a lot and take pictures.

Good. Was a bit brisk coming in this AM, but it's only seven miles. My "three season" mesh jacket, with both rain and insulating liners in, a fleece jacket under that, topped with a scarf do the upper good. Need either insulated riding pants or chaps. And footwear that passes in the casual office. Really don't want to pack shoes to change into.

Plan to pick up heated grips sometime soon. Never thought they would really be effective til riding that Spyder in 50 degrees with my summer gloves. Made my hands sweat on high.

I have ONE freaking finger that gets cold. I wear too much glove in cool weather just for that finger and, in the cold, it turns to ice.

Added a balaclava a couple years ago for when it is below freezing.

The greatest warmth item I've added was a neck gaiter. Stopped air blowing right down my core. Of course, every year, first cold ride, I get reminded that ALL the vents on my cold jacket are still open... :stupid:

Deep cut on that finger ever? I have one, years back a knife slip led to a bone deep cut. That finger runs way colder than the others. My scarf does a good job, twice around, bring it up over the chin, cinched down with helmet strap. did forget to close the forehead vent on the helmet, noticed that about a mile into the ride.....:killingme

Not particularly bad. Can barely see the scars anymore. I think, now that you got me thinking about it, it is the number of times I have smashed it with a hammer, right pointer finger. I am a lefty. So, every nail I've ever missed, every screw I've come off of, it got hit.

591 miles, 28 hours. Man, what a trip!

We got a late start and I should have abandoned plan A right then and there instead of risking getting to Richmond after dark. As it was, we got to Petersburg, WV, and had some lunch and, instead of going on into Smoke Hole, we decided I was a complete idiot and we started B lining, down 220, 33 over to 81, down to 64.

220 and 33 are great roads so, it wasn't a total bail. The 81 and 64 parts were and, once we got onto 81, it was hammer time. 130 miles of it. That and the setting sun.

The last hour was in the dark and I stayed plenty warm feeling like a complete idiot for putting us in this situation; against the clock, riding at dusk and into dark.
400 miles, 8 hours.

In any event, we roared into town, the Double Tree folks treated us like royalty, even gave us a special place to park the bike in the garage. Dove in the shower, ate the two chocolate chip cookies they give guests for dinner and sat down in some pretty good, but tight, seats, 2 minutes into the show.

AMAZING show and up on on the road again by 9:30, home around 2:30, much more direct but, still gorgeous route home. 33 to 522, then over to Orange on 651 (IIRC), then up 15 to Culpepper, then 229 to 211 and then 688 ot Orleans and a very cool place to have lunch, 688 all the way to 17, West on 50 then 601 across the mountain, rt 7 to Purcelville, 690 to Roundhill, 9 to Harpers Ferry road and then home.

Christmas present; heated gloves for Lori!

:buddies:

In bed by 6:30!

My favorite ride this year was every time I pulled the bike out of the garage. But I enjoyed taking the gf to Cheltenham *sp* Veterans Cemetary to visit her Mom and Dad. Nice place and very well kept. I could feel the vet pride as soon as I pulled through the gate. The gf loves being on the back of the bike which is a definite plus for me. :yay:

I haven't been to Southern Md. In a few years and that was just got high school or club soccer matches. Any good routes to recommend down that way for a ride? I live in Carroll County and hit some back roads here and in Frederick County. Always looking for new options.

There aren't any. Riding in SOMD is more about the destination; Broome's Island or down to St. Georges Island. Maybe the Torpedo bar (I forget the name of the marina, Dennis Pt.?) . Riding across the TJ bridge is very cool.

Then I may as well take the car. I would like to take some vacation next year and visit places in Maryland. Small state with plenty I have not seen yet. Thanks.
